Breakdancing at the Olympics

Postby Jem Smith » 10 Aug 2024, 09:07

This year Breaking has been added to the Olympics, apparently to generate more youth interest in the Olympics. To me it seems weird to include dance, since dancing is an art rather than a sport, but I suppose it's a fine line, since things like ice skating and rhythmic gymnastics are pretty close to dance. What do you think?

Either way, it's kind of cool to watch. This article is about Raygun (Rachel Gunn), an Australian competitor.

I saw the ladies breaking battles for gold and bronze and they were excellent. It is unusual to see dancing in the Olympics, but the athletic skills and fitness of the dancers was amazing and most enjoyable to watch. I really don't know anything about break dancing, but including it in the Olympics made the 2024 Olympics more enjoyable, in my opinion.

Yes, I think it added to the fun of the Olympics.

My partner used to break dance. I have zero aptitude for it myself but I do enjoy watching it. The Aussie entry at the Olympics was unique. She came last, but I admire her for doing her own thing.

It was probably only going to be in it once anyway, not because of her. They add new things and take them away all the time. The host country is allowed to add one new sport if they want.

They should have added cricket and it should be a permanent part of Olympics and not this break dance

Don't worry. Cricket would be there for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics(T 20 variety).
I did not see Break dancing but would be keen to check out on a few highlights.

I LOVE dance including breakdance as it takes me down memory lane. It was HOT when I was growing up... I know, showing my age, here

I agree, including it is like fine margins, but you won't hear me complain because I love it. I have to say while the Australian lady's breakdancing was unique, it was far from the breakdancing I'm accustomed to, and I've watched A LOT of it. I actually wondered if it was a wind up. But then I read she was a dance teacher! The memes that came out off the back of her performance though... HILARIOUS!!!
