In a rich sports year, the first major sports tournament is the World Handball Championship in Germany.

The tournament starts on January 10, and ends with the final match in Berlin on January 28.
The host Germany is one of the favorites even though the last few tournaments were not close to a medal. The Danes and the French are the main favorites of the tournament. Croatia, once a handball superpower, is no longer the favorite of the tournament. At the last world championship in Egypt, it did not pass the group stage of the tournament.

The only time I have seen a handball match is when I stumbled into an Olympics handball match between South Korea and France some 8 years ago. Do we have international powerhouses in handball?

I don't remember to seeing India on any championship but Egypt is very good and China is often on tournament. South Korea is also very good. I think best from Asian countrys.

Handball is not a popular sports. Is there even sufficient funds in the sport when you compare it to football? So players get big from being handball stars? Doesn't look like a sports that would attract me.

There is money in this sport but not even close as in football. In some coutrys where handball is popular like Norway, Denmark or Sweden, handball players are real stars. In France are to but much less than football starts.

Did you ever watched any handball game? Entire game, not just highlights.

That is true. Unfortunately many people say rules are not good enough and judge have to much influence so they give up from it. This was result of poll on US market. They are right.

Championship started in Thursday. In Friday there was good game between young Croatia team who beat very experience Spain team. Biggest surprise was yesterday when Norway played draw with Faroe Islands.
