India doing good at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023

Postby ptrikha21 » 28 Sep 2023, 09:52

I think the current Asian games at Hangzhou in China were originally slated for 2022, but got delayed by one year.
India has been doing good.
Yes, you might say that India used to win Asian games medals before as well.
Yet the Indian contingent has won a Team Gold in Equestrian- first in the last 41 years !
Plus some medals in water events like Rowing etc.
India has won a Gold in Women's cricket as well.
Plus there are hopes in Hockey, Wrestling and Men's cricket as well.
I have not seen about other countries but China, Japan and South Korea dominate the proceedings.

An interesting news: Afghanistan has two teams: official sent by the Taliban regime and unofficial by the ex Government officials, who are residing outside Afghanistan.

It's good to see medals coming every day. India is now at number six in medal tally. Let's see how many more come to us.
It's interesting to know about the Afghanistan team. I was not aware of that. Thank you for sharing.

So the Taliban also want to participate in Sports. I thought that it is highly unholy. Very ironic. India by virtue of it's population is supposed to be dominating this games with China.

This time we have Cricket as well. Else I have a keen interest in Athletics, Badminton, Field Hockey and Swimming.
I might be however watching more of the Highlights and recordings due to time and work constraints.

Yes, India has been winning good medals. I might try to share more discussions as time permits.
I have not checked out on which Afghan team has been winning more or any related news.

As of now, India's tally is at 53.
13 Gold, 21 Silver and 19 Bronze.

It's China, Japan and South Korea at the top.
Population wise, one might have thought of India as topping, but it is only in the recent decades that we have an uptick in quality players and results in Sports apart from Cricket.
Even Hockey is on resurgence after a few decades.
We now have better sponsorship, more sports facility, better coaches and more funding.
Still, a long way to go.

And at a tally of 53, it is much better than many of the previous Asian games.

I am glad your country is doing good in those games. Personally, it is the first time I have heard about them, maybe it is because I live in Europe.

Asian Games is a prestigious event which all the major nations from Asia take part in including India. It is just like the Olympics , but only restricted to Asian countries.

Thanks. As per the latest inputs, India is assured of at least 100 medals- their best showing so far.
With teams like China, Japan and South Korea, who have proved their worth at the Olympic Games also, Asian Games should be getting more focus.
Now, I mind sound skeptical, but I have seen US sites like NY Times, as well as some UK Sites like DailyMirror, Sun etc.
They seem to be much more skewed towards their domestic sports or European or American-centric one.
So may be they do not provide that much space to Asian Games.
On the other hand, our news sites and newspapers provide a lot of coverage to sports or Games like Euro Cup Football, Premier League Football, Baseball and Rugby world cups, Golf Tours, The 4 Grand slams etc.
There could be exceptions of course, but I think something needs to be changed.

I am really proud of India's performance in the current Asian Games. This should motivate the other sports in our country apart from Cricket more and in the coming days, who knows we could really replicate this kind of performance at the Olympics and seal the mouth of critics.

Yes I agree. The achievements in these games where we have the 3 Asian Sporting Giants - China, Japan and South Korea who also excel in the Olympics, especially in Shooting, Archery and a few more sports mean that the Indian Sports persons have better chances of medals when they take part in the Olympics 2024 to be held next year in Paris.
The key would be for them not to get carried away, bogged down or injured.
Plus the Sports authority, coaches and Government have a key role to play.

I am happy to see our national game Hockey doing good. We did well in the last Olympics too..
Now we have crossed the 100 marks tally with our medals. And we have got some decent number of gold medals too. That builds hope for coming Olympics next year in Paris.

We just need to see India in the FIFA world cup. That would be very epic.

India would always be a cricket hot bed. Seems no sports can thrive more than cricket in India. They have a monopoly over other sports there.

In a way yes.
However, we are seeing great progress in Badminton, Shooting as well as Hockey.
Plus of course - Javelin throw (Neeraj Chopra).
