How to Manage the Pain as You Leave the Mormon Church

Postby friendociate » 06 Mar 2023, 16:34

Born-and-raised in the Mormon (Latter-Day Saints (LDS)) Church, but feeling 'confined' by some of its rituals?

Johnny Harris has gone through the pain-&-torture that's taxing you now. He explains,

Let's look at some of the roots of those old ways:

The word "Mormon" is the name of 'the prophet who came to Joseph Smith and dictated The Book of Mormon,' a prophet whos name comes from a wordroot that means "More Good"---the same wordroot that gave us Mormons, Mormonism.

But Johnny & his wife Izzy--as they broke free of Mormonism's limitations--had to find a pathway for their lives now that they were outside 'the framework' the church had entrained in both of them.

"Pathway" is (of course) a combination of the words "Path" & "Way." 'The wordroot that gives us "Path"' means "Passageway, Route or Track made by the Feet (or Wheels) of its Travelers"---same wordroot as "Paths, FootPath, Pathfinder, Pathless, Pathway, WarPath

"Way" comes from a wordroot that means "to Go, Move, Transport in a Vehicle"---same wordroot as WayOut, Ways, Alleyway, Anyway, Archway, AreaWay, Beltway, Breezeway, Byway, CartWay, Causeway, Edgeways etc.

(of course that brings up Lord Jesus Christ's claim to BE The Way (& The Truth & The Life)---and the Greek (translated Way) can also be translated "Path, Road or Journey."

Johnny lists four big Mormon rituals (major "Covenant" Mormons believe are their purpose for living---covenants that earn you the infamous "Mormon Underwear" that symbolizes your commitment to Mormon doctrine)
  1. Baptism
  2. Confirmation
  3. The Endowment ("an hour-long ritual inside the temple" ... I dunno, maybe it's like Catholics' "First Communion" and/or "First Confession"?)
  4. The Sealing or Marriage
And the rituals help to sew things deep inside your soul---things that require years of purging to clean them out ... years of behavior that makes you seem like 'that anti-Mormon archetype good Mormon children are afraid of becoming'!

Purge your soul of the idea that (in Mormonism & in all forms of Christianity and probably in other religions too) "you're a sinner" and the only way you can be redeemed is through "submission to Allah (maybe that's what Mormons also call God)."

Johnny mentions the Mormons' belief that they-alone know the truth ... but I'm sure he knows that most (if not all) religions & schools have that belief as well. It makes me think of a line from JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
Tim Rice (in writing Jesus Christ's trial before Pontius Pilate) wrote:[PILATE]
Then you're a king? --

[JESUS]
-- It's you that say I am
I look for truth, and find that I get damned

[PILATE]
But what is truth? Is truth unchanging law?
[b]We both have truths - are mine the same as yours?[/b]

No matter in which church or religious ideology one is raised, if you feel the need to change and you think it is going to be better for you, then you should follow your heart because it is certainly more painful to regret later.

Mormon is a walk in the park compare to Islam though. I want to leave so bad but I will be murdered for Apostacy laws. I am too slutty for religions and My escape plan requires me making a hundred thousand a year at least. I need to have an Ideal Visa and go to a secular country and convert to a religion that is easy to leave, since I just want the M word out of my profile. Be atheist and free.

strength in numbers ... that's the only reason for religion---the worshipped one is just 'the celebrity the fan-club is following' ... He/It exists in much the same way as Santa Claus

Crazy! Really crazy! You can seek for asylum in a more liberal country or isn't that available to you from your end?

Okay guys this dude is crazy and can make you burst your lungs out. I wonder why you would want to leave Islam so badly.

When we are talking about Religion I think that above everything we just need to ensure that we love God and we also should love our neighbours. That is the benchmark of finding peace within ourselves and feeling that we have to be relevant and selfless as we live on this earth.
If whatever you believe in does not resonate with that then you are going to have a lot of identity crisis and personal development issues within yourself.

I dont like Islam because they punish people who wants to leave Islam death. They encourage cousin marriages. They allow child marriage and I hate pedos. I have some health defects because my grandparents are cousins whose parents are also cousins. RAPE victims are victim blamed and the Im a former guerilla who fought Taliban members. I dont want to be Christian neither. I Dont have identity crisis. I Want to be out of religion since I was a kid trying to survive the so called religion of peace.

It must be very difficult to leave the church and make new connections in the world. There are some really good podcasts by ex-mormons that people might find helpful. https://podcasts.feedspot.com/ex_mormon_podcasts/

According to the book of Mormon, the word Mormon comes originally from the land of Mormon where the prophet, whose name was Alma, preached the gospel. The 4th century prophet was named after the place. The 'more good' thing does come from the LDS church though.

Religion in the long run messes up with your reasoning and messes your humanity. Every religion is guilty as charged. I really wish we can break free globally from the shackles of religion.

The problem isn't religion but mankind, religion is an excuse used by some to act on their perversions and cravings for power.
Lots of bad things have occurred in the name of science as well, such as experiments on non-consenting humans, but that doesn't make science utterly evil.
However, I still believe everyone should be given the right to identify as they please (with few limitations perhaps due to common sense), so you should be free to not identify as a Muslim and I'm sorry for what you've been going through. I just don't like seeing some bad apples holding people back from enjoying the good side of faith and spirituality, which can help with mental health (along with modern medicine) and the world is so much in need of such help.

The main thing I hate about people like the ones who are mentioned in the video, is that regardless of the reason for leaving, they attack the character of the religion they are leaving, and not the people who actually were the cause of why they left. You can have a great religion, but made to look bad, because both leaders and the people in the community causing issues that should never have been interpreted in the way that they are behaving.

I've seen plenty of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, behave exactly as the church expects, loving, caring, helping people in need. And yet, I have seen far too many suffer from people such as family members, local congregation members and congregation leaders, simply because they expect people to do stuff their way, and NOT the way that things are supposed to be done.

You don't force people to behave a certain way, if the goal is to get people to believe and act without having to be told to do so.

Some people actually dislike the religion itself, not just individual people within the church.
Some things people might object to about Mormonism:
-rules about sex - requirement of abstinence outside of opposite sex marriage, homophobia
-requirements about modesty of dress (I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with dressing that way if you want to, but I can see why someone might object to their choices being restricted)
-coffee, tea, tobacco and alcohol are forbidden
-the expectation of going on a proselytizing mission (leaving home and family behind to travel to a strange place, and spend a lot of time having people yell at you and shut doors in your face)
-the expectation of having a large family (not everyone wants that, obviously. In particular, some women don't want to be pregnant and give birth half a dozen times)
-the silliness of the story about Joseph Smith, the golden plates, the magic glasses etc. Read the book of Mormon if you want to know more about this. There's even a bit with wooden submarines.
-child labour https://abcnews.go.com/US/flds-church-members-fined-million-alleged-child-labor/story?id=30916213 You could put this one down to 'a few bad people in the church' but the church let it happen.

In any case, the purpose of the video above is not to attack anyone. Did you watch it?

Mormons don't preach pure abstinence. I have met a few young Mormons who say that their religion permits them to practice "Soaking" to battle the fiery urge. I know many devoted Mormons that actually "Soak".

Yes I watched it. And you were misreading what I posted. What I said, is directly mentioned in the first sentence of what I wrote, which doesn't attack the video itself, but references a PART of the video in which the guy IN the video actually mentions the very thing I posted about.

Here's the quote I said:

Notice the part I bolded to emphasis what was mentioned in the video?

You said people like the ones mentioned in the video, not what was mentioned in the video. That implied that you were talking about the guy who made the video, and saying that he was attacking individual people from his church. Since that's not what it was about at all it sounded as though you hadn't watched it.

He was disillusioned with the religion itself.
