Is "Magick" Different from "Magic"?

Postby friendociate » 08 Jan 2023, 13:13

ImageI'm studying the words in a description of 'My Goddess' Luna (Roman equivalent of the Greek Selene---actually 'one personality of a Triad' (with Diana & ... Hecate? Proserpina? Juno? ... I'm getting some mixed-up information ...)

Anyway, one of the things I learned about her is that she has "magick powers." I don't think that's different from 'magic powers,' but the world my resource used was 'magick.' I looked for that word on my etymology-resource, and was directed to the verb "magic" (to affect as if by magic, 'magicked, magicking').

So 'magick' is 'magical action' (as opposed to 'potential' ... "in a young girl's heart  ")

Yes, "magick" is a spelling of magic that is used by some practitioners of ceremonial magic, who believe that it differentiates their practices from stage magic or other types of magic that are performed for entertainment. The term "magick" was popularized by the 20th-century occultist Aleister Crowley, who defined it as "the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will." According to Crowley, magick is a way to connect with the divine and to manipulate natural forces through the use of ritual, symbolism, and meditation. Some people who practice magick believe that it allows them to tap into hidden or supernatural powers, while others see it as a way to focus their intentions and achieve their goals through psychological and spiritual means.

magick is real magic that affects energy and the world around us. Magic is just stage magic or sleight of hand

if you notice guys like Elon musk who get super rich and take over the world,
they use magick. If you see people who are successful they understand how to use
magick to gain more money

Wrong. Money has nothing to do with 'that kind of supernatural.'

I thought Crowley would use "magick" to sound cool. Well, I guess he wanted to tell illusionism and witchcraft apart because the former was more popular at the time. Either way, good to know.
Shouldn't it be obvious for a goddess to have magicKal powers though? :?

Can you give more information or links to references for that? Do you think it is possible that they are just good at building businesses?

You've probably seen the word "magick" used in place of "magic" in magical writing. In spite of the fact that Aleister Crowley, the first modern user of the term, gave "magick" a rather precise definition, many people do in reality interchange the two terms.

A lot like the terms "Christian" & "moral or ethical" (e.g. when someone does something harmful to others, often people will say, "That wasn't very 'Christian,' was it?"
