Countdown to the XXXII Olympics

Postby ptrikha21 » 04 Jul 2021, 15:49

So finally after a One year delay and hiccups and troubles along the way, we are close to the start of XXXII Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
These would start from 23rd July 2021 and would end on 8th August 2021.
There are a lot of restrictions- quarantine rules etc in place but we do here some athletes testing positive.
Still I think the games would bring some excitement.
India has some great medal hopes in Shooting, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Archery and this time in Hockey as well.

So are you folks excited about Olympics?

New Zealand will be winning lots of Gold medals from their women because they are sending transwomen in some sports.

Yes, I definitely will. It's long overdue, can't wait. The track and field segment is the most exciting for me. It would seem like a crime if I miss it. Everybody in my circle will be tuned to this. I watch the swimming and gymnastics too.

Not really a fan of the Olympics and never had an interest to watch it. I probably won't be watching unless something interesting happens. Or if I do watch, it'll just be tiny clips and not the entire segment.

I'm glad it's finally happening though. I hope everything goes well.

Sounds interesting. Moreover, New Zealand has a strong sporting culture. Their cricket team and even Hockey team are always very competitive.

Yes I hope that it goes well, although with so many athletes, the concept of Bio-Secure zones can be so tough to follow.

Yes and Steeplechase and the different 100/200/400/800 and even the longer races are some of my favorites.

Its confirmed, coliseums will look creepy because there will be no audiences for the protection of the athletes.

It's for the best. They can't afford to have another COVID outbreak. A lot of people aren't vaccinated yet in Japan because the vaccine was only given to essential workers.

That being said, when I was in Japan I heard the tickets were priced in the thousands. So I'm guessing they're losing a lot of revenue by not allowing spectators. Still, it's better than cancelling the Olympics.

I heard on the news that only 15% of the Japanese population have been vaccinated and they are not overkeen on holding them. There certainly won't be the atmosphere that usually exists during these sports events. I will be watching some but not all.

Protection of the athletes?

Yes, we in India have also a low % being fully vaccinated. But still the absolute single vaccination number is 350 Million Plus!
I wonder why has Japan lagged even with many more resources than India?

Cancellation would have meant a total loss. However, still holding the Olympics means at least getting some share in the advertising revenues and advertisers' fees.

I don't know about now, but they didn't really have a lot of resources when they started. They only had a small shipment of vaccines at the beginning because their infection rate wasn't as high as some other countries. Japan gave those vaccines to medical workers first, as most countries did with their essential workers.

In addition, they are also more strict with the vaccine. They ran a few local trials to make sure the vaccine was safe for their population before administering it. This caused another delay.

But the biggest reason, in my opinion, is actually the lack of resources they have. In the US at least, you can go to most drug stores/pharmacy and someone working in the pharmacy can give you a vaccination, even if they are not licensed. Or there are vaccination sites, where volunteers can give you the vaccine. In Japan, only doctors/nurses can give out the vaccinations. There are simply not enough doctors/nurses available to do this. Most doctors/nurses are busy treating people and have no time to give vaccinations. Even if there were doctors/nurses available, only a few can be vaccinated at a time due to space. They can't have people crowding at hospitals so they have to do things one at a time. This, in my opinion, is the biggest reason for the delay.

Either way, I hope they have a safe Olympics. Hopefully no one gets infected and has to miss the games because of COVID. I'm sure all the athletes are vaccinated though?

We just hope that things go well and no hassles are created in the event due to this pandemic. Tokyo is under a state of emergency with an increasing number of cases there. That might be a concern. Anyway, it would be the first of its kind of Olympics and definitely the one to go down in History.

Definitely, and with the latest news we've been getting all we can do is hope for the best. It was always an exciting time but now we have good reasons to believe it won't be the same. Yikes!

Another of my favorites is Swimming, with different categories like Freestyle, Backstroke etc. Plus Long Jump and Javelin throw and Steeple Chase.

Yes, and the cases being reported are worrisome. Let us hope that there are no more cases when the actual action starts.

Yes a lot different for the athletes and the Organizers but well, a lot of excitement would be increased once the games actually start.

Well, fingers will be crossed till the whole event gets over. let's hope that all goes well. Even a single infection can upset a lot of things.

One African nation, Guinea has officially pulled out of the Tokyo Olympics citing Covid-19. They had five athletes scheduled to participate, one of whom told AP she is still confused over the decision.

Yes. The arrangements look good but Covid 19 can be so tricky.

Now we hear few athletes and non athletes getting infected. Let's hope that they are able to contain the virus and it doesn't spread. Else it can be a real spoilsport in such big event.
