Toky Olympics which were scheduled to happen in 2020 and postponed to 2021 owing to Pandemic are facing a huge uncertainty.
I read that some members of the Torch relay squad were tested Covid positive. A US Sports team cancelled their training in Japan due to the rising cases here.
The Japanese Government cannot cancel the Olympics as they have already spend Billions of Dollars in the preparation of Olympics.
Foreign spectators are banned but with rising cases, even domestic ones might be very limited in the stadium.
I think in future, Olympics might have to be restructured or conducted across two countries to cut the financial and logistical risks.

I don't know how this will affect the olympics on the long run. It might make sense to restructure the way olympics are organised, in case another pandemic happens in the future which is very possible. But I also think it would be something most people wouldn't be happy about.

As for the 2020 Olympics, it is a very unfortunate case, even with spectator restrictions the risks are very big. I feel really bad for ahtletes who have trained for last year, for many of them a year of "delaying" their peak performance has already been hard enough.

Plus it is even tougher for athletes in India. Many have qualified but are not getting enough training facilities. Some have themselves got Covid and are recovering. Yet they do want to play and not miss out.

Yes, taking the present situation , Japan has spent a lot and the US is not ready to cooperate with the conduction of the events, though the reasons are genuine! So in future to avoid such a burden on a single country at least two countries should be given permission so that the expenses be shared! Not a bad idea, dear friend!

It's a complicated situation.

Obviously, the biggest concern for having the Olympics is the spread of COVID19. The vaccination is still not available to the public in Japan which is a huge risk for those who want to attend the Olympics. They also have to take into consideration the athletes who were affected by COVID... some were unable to train properly or there was a delay in training due ot facilities being shut down. Those athletes may not be able to give their 100% because of such factors.

But they've spent so, so much money and effort to prepare for the Olympics and it would all go to a waste if they decide to cancel it. They have been closing popular tourist spots for years to do renovations for the 2020 Olympics. Of course, money and effort can't be compared to lives lost, but it will be a huge disappointment to just cancel the games. Maybe they will postpone it again, if it's possible. And in the meantime they can work on getting the vaccine out to everyone.

Now International Olympic Association (IOA) has said that Olympics are on. Now the question is how would it be managed?

As of now, it seems that the Olympics would go on, but many athletes even from US and other countries might not be able to make it.
Some players from India are having problems as they have missed out on some qualifying tournaments due to flights from India to many countries being banned.
May be there could still be a workaround.
Plus it might not be as exciting as well.

There are protests going on there against the government who wants to continue with the event. The US is not ready to cooperate. Covid condition in Japan is still a concern and they are going through a huge economic crisis. Cancelling the event or postponing it further might not help them. It's a tough decision for the government there and they are already facing a lot fo heat.

The Olympics are going ahead, although the risks remain. The number of athletes that actually turn out is likely to be lesser than expected.
