The Year 2020 Preview time: The canceled / postponed sports events

Postby ptrikha21 » 19 Dec 2020, 17:52

While I am not into the habit of regular "Year end" posts or articles, I thought of talking about major sporting events (not very comprehensively) that were canceled/postponed this year.

1. Tokyo Olympics 2020

A much awaited once in four years event that has been postponed to 2021. Since it is clear that not many across the world would be vaccinated even by the next year end, it would be a big task for Japan to create "Multi-Bio-Bubbles".
Let us see how they do it, or would they extend the duration of Olympics?

2. Euro 2020, Euro 2021 Women's Event and Copa America - all these Football events postponed

3. ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2020 - to be held in AUstralia in October-November 2020 has been postponed to 2022.
And we will have another World T-20 in India in later half of 2021.

4. Wimbledon Tennis tournament for 2020 was canceled for the first time after World War II.
The next edition would hopefully be held in 2021.

5. Indian Premier League or IPL cricket was postponed and held from September to November in UAE- Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

For me personally, The Olympics are the one for which I await the most.
Hopefully we can watch them from Japan next year.

Why dont they use virtual audience? it worked for NBA and WWE....

All they need is LCD screens, The pandemic won't end next year so they need a long term solution.

In title you post two options with or sign between but you didn't offer any of it in poll options. Yes or No can't cover it good. I am for longer duration but not for lesser participants. So YES and NO don't fit to my answer.

Yes that could be a great option for Tokyo 2021 (earlier 2020) but that won't help them recover the Billions spent in hosting the Olympics in Tokyo. But well, good from public health and safety.

Let me see if I can change the options.

They can allow some real audience on open stadiums like football, tennis... Not full stadium but like 25% would still be good and motivation for players.

I don't think the problem is having or not audience, some of those sports are collective sport and it requires many players at the same time, the risk of getting the virus is there, no matter the audience.

In this case all team sports should not even start after first lockdown. Why can we have national league, Championship and we can't have it on Olympics games?

Melbourne would host The traditional Boxing Day Match between India and Aussies from tomorrow 26th December with 1/3rd of the normal audience in the stadium but it cannot as yet happen in most countries in this world.
