The mantra is (in Korean Sanskrit script, so forgive me if I spell-nounce it wrong) "Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo."
'Many' (perhaps 'most' or 'official Buddhist leaders') interpret it as meaning 'I respect "The Lotus Sutra" (whose title is Myoho-Renge-Kyo), but I (coming from a Roman Catholic background, but thrown off the Catholic life-path by a Traumatic Brain-Injury) reinterpret it (with the meanings of the individual syllables (scroll-down to the paragraph that starts, "The individual Characters that make up Myoho-Renge-Kyo")) as
'I listen to hear what I need to do (Nam), I hear "what must be the Divine Voice" (because nobody said anything, so how-else can I hear it? ... Myo-), and I try to follow its orders (-ho), but some people seem to be acting on different orders (Ren-), or reacting to them & -other actions in the world (-ge; but all our actions will produce the same old world that keeps on spinnin` (Kyo).
But the picture I see: campfires, 'polluting' the atmosphere. I see the fire the ancient Israelites 'kept burning by holy vow' (maybe that's why they're called 'votive candles'). And I see the fire from 'outside their camp' (a place they called Sheol ... I think, at-least when they settled in 'the Promised Land').
Two fires positioned as they were because of the smells they carried. Two pillars of smoke that (along with the pillars of smoke from all the other fires in the world---natural & manmade, wood-fire & volcano) gather into the same atmosphere---different areas in the atmosphere at first, but eventually in the same cloud (if not falling back to earth in the form of acid-rain or smog or etc.)
That's what I see ... can you find any pictures that illustrate that? (or can you perhaps draw a picture of it?)
Of course, thinking of 'the good smoke coming together with the bad smoke, and each kind moving the other around in the mixture'; you can see how 'Buddhism' came to mind (if not, I'm sure there's a picture to illustrate it
)
(okay; maybe not this one, but I thought it looked cool)
