Juan Carlos, the former king of Spain, has said in his new memoir that he feels abandoned and misunderstood, even by his son King Felipe VI and his family. He says he understands that Felipe must be firm as a king, but as a son it hurts him to see him be merciless.
Juan Carlos admits that his affair with Corinna ruined his reputation and sent him into exile in Abu Dhabi. He says he gave the Spanish people democratic freedoms but he himself has never lived free.
Now he wants to return to Spain to enjoy a peaceful retirement and be buried with national honors. He also says he gained great respect for Franco and explains the trauma of losing his brother Alfonso when he was young.
Public opinion turned against him after the Botswana trip scandal and he finally resigned in 2014 and moved to the UAE.
