Do children pay for books in your schools?

Postby mrki444 » 15 Aug 2025, 11:05

School books are a big expense for family budgets. Although everyone emphasizes the importance of education, unfortunately most of the costs are still borne by parents. In my country, all primary school children receive free books and return them at the end of the year. This is a great relief for parents who buy exercise books and notebooks and other supplies. Secondary school children do not receive any support, so all the costs are on their parents.

We don't have private elementary schools, only high schools so parents pay everything.

You have raised a very important point about the financial burden of school books on families. It is encouraging that primary school children in your country receive free textbooks, as this ensures that every child has access to basic learning materials regardless of family income. However, the lack of support for secondary school students is indeed concerning, since education becomes even more demanding and costly at that stage. Extending free or subsidized book programs to higher levels could greatly reduce inequality and help more students continue their studies without financial stress. Your observation highlights the need for governments to invest more in education so that the cost of learning does not fall so heavily on parents.

Nope especially in the public schools. Books are lent to students in all grades and they are to return them after or at the end of the school year. Lost books are not never paid.

No, in public schools here children don't have to pay for textbooks, just stationery supplies like pens and notebooks to write in. In the last 5 years they also brought in a rule that children in high school have to have a device (laptop or tablet) as well that they bring from home.

What about if the student can't afford to get a laptop?

Where I come from... wether you are in elementary private or public..
Or you are in university...
What ever you are ...you will have to buy books/handouts as they call it in university...
In uni they'd tell you to pay for it that it's pert of their mark
sometimes they'd give you sometimes not
Quite sad and annoying

In my country books are free unil children finish secondary school, only those who go to college/university need to pay for the books. It is a great relief in my family budget as I have two children in school.

That's pretty awesome, over here not everyone can actually afford this, or even a laptop.

Now all tablets are back in schools and most can't be used anymore. 5 years is long time for tablet lifetime.
