Do you top at road traffic lights even when there is no other cars?

Postby kat82 » 09 Jul 2025, 15:11

I recently traveled at night. I reached at the traffic lights and no other car was coming from either sides. But the lights showed RED. I felt like continuing but then I told myself to wait. I really wondered why wait for green when there was no coming car. Do you stop and wait even when there are no cars?

According to the set rules and regulations in my country, you should stop while driving on the traffic lights point. Failure to which attracts penalties and other fines

Here in the US, it is not uncommon for a traffic cop sitting nearby, waiting patiently for someone to run the red light. They come flying out of their hiding place to zap you with a ticket. It is even possible they might intentionally control the changing just so they can write tickets. There have been times that has happened.

You might get away with it but you might get an unwanted ticket and fine for your impatience. I guess it depends on how big the fine could be in your country or how big a bribe you have to pay the cop if they play that way. Either way, it is cash out of your pocket for violating the law.

I choose to wait until it is legal to cross the intersection. I've got more time than money to burn.

I have got a feeling of going even when there is RED but then i fear of being issued with an express ticket. But still why make us wait when no other car is crossing?

Rules are there for a reason. Even if the road looks empty, traffic lights help keep things predictable and safe. Plus, following them avoids any unexpected fines or trouble.

I don't drive, but back when I was learning to yes, absolutely I'd stop at the lights even if there was no traffic. It's the law and there are often cameras. If you get caught running a red light, even if there is no other traffic, you can get fined or even lose your license.

Sometimes I pass road on red sign but only as pedestrian. With car never. For passing red light, they can take you a driver license and they should.

Many people in India do not. I do.
Because Red and Green Lights are for our safety. they are not a punishment for us.

When we all respect traffic signals, it creates a safer environment for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Over here most of the roads don't have traffic lights, for some reason cars always hit and damage them at night, i don't really understand what's wrong with them.

It must be annoying to keep dealing with that.
