I think about people who are blind and how they can function. Have you ever paid attention to all that you do or can do blind? Touch, smell, hearing, etc. easily fill in the gaps.
For example,
I can reach a hand into a pocket and extract the exact item I am looking for. I keep a lighter, a jack knife, several coins and a few other odds and ends and can reach in even to extract exact change.
I can do my morning business and reach around to do the cleanup without seeing a thing. In fact, I have never seen that activity.
I can walk around the house at night without needing to turn on any lights. I know the paths and routes without even opening my eyes.
I know which neighbors drive in or out of our apartment complex by the sound of their car engine. I don't have to look unless someone has a visitor who does not drive in often enough to recognize.
I can pack tobacco into my pipe by feel and don't need to see what I am doing.
I can tell which local restaurant has fired up the grill by the aroma that surrounds them; even several blocks away.
Of course there are other things I can do without looking but there is also a lot I can't do without sight.
What kinds of things can you do blind? Where is the line you can't go past without sight?
