Low Blood Sugar

Postby Spontaneo » 02 Feb 2025, 21:07

Do you ever have low blood sugar? How do you know? What do you do?

This morning I felt lethargic, which is very odd. I thought that maybe I was simply stressed out. So, I laid down to rest.

After a while, I thought maybe I needed to have something sweet. So, I had 1 hostess mini cherry fruit pie and 2 peanut butter oatmeal balls. I felt much better!

I had a couple of pitchers of unsweetened iced tea in the fridge for diet Arnold Palmer's (homemade) so I then sweetened one of the pitchers so I would have sweet tea handy.

No worries. I am OK now. I just needed something sweet.

I am not sure, I don't have any issues with it but I will get it monitored soon although I haven't felt any symptoms

Low blood sugar rarely happens to myself. Quite often, I watch my weight and not allow myself any sugar. The body does require some sugar! I need to remind myself! You'd think that smoothies and milkshakes were sufficient but I usually just use eggs, milk, peanut butter and some cookies blended in a blender.

No worries though! I am gulping on some sweet tea!

Yep. I find that eating a good amount of protein each meal stops me from having a sugar crash. I also try to eat at regular intervals.

I remember a girl from school that was allowed to bring crackers to class for hypoglycemia. I do not have hypoglycemia, but have learned from her to keep crackers handy.

Our body always gives us signs when it's in need of something in Particular. I have never experienced low blood sugar though, or maybe i just haven't realized it yet. Cause there was a time i was always feeling dizzy.

You definitely should be monitoring it with accurate measurements. My doctor just took me off Metformin 500 Mg twice a day after 20 years measuring with a glucometer and blood draws every three months. I have been off 3 months now and my A1C was 5.7 so he said just keep checking, I would freak out without knowing.

My family physician disagrees. He feels no need for my blood sugar to be monitored every day. He checks my blood when he sees myself. Thank you though.

To effectively monitor your blood sugar levels, it's best to acquire a blood glucose meter. Common symptoms of low blood sugar include shaking, heart palpitations, weakness, and dizziness.

Do you pack little treats when you are out running errands? If so, what do you pack?

There are days when I pack chips or crackers. There are days when I pack a sandwich. I like to keep some diet soft drinks in a lunch tote cooler and even a filled sports bottle.

If they are the sugar free kind (with artificial sweeteners) I would think they would not help with low blood sugar.

You would think so, but last week, I had had an appointment. All I had packed was bottled water. I felt nauseous, light-headed, over-heated and dizzy. An acquaintance who happens to be a nurse gave myself a diet Coke. I felt much much better.

Diet Coke has caffieine in it (around the same as a cup of tea), so that might perk you up. It also has a little bit of sodium, which might help if your electrolytes were out of balance from drinking a lot of water and not eating.

Yes, I know about the caffeine. I need to really start thinking about treats to pack for occasions like that. I know that maybe some prepared sandwiches and sticking the sandwiches in the freezer. I do have a topic here on FC called "freezer sandwiches". I think that I need to practice what I preach!

People should not give diet soft drinks such a bad rap either. Thank goodness for my acquaintance the nurse and diet Coke!
