It depends on your site. For sites like Facebook, apps make a lot more sense because they're easier to browse and you have a large number of users. But for a normal forum, a responsive design makes much more sense.

If you will have some type of notification, than you should have app. If you will let visitors browse your page when they want, than site with responsive design is enough.

I think both have their own roles to play.

I think there are ways to get notifications with browsers now though. Not sure if they work with mobile though because I know Chrome on a laptop has browser notifications.

Will it work for all websites or only a selected few?

You choose for which sites you will get notifications.

I am trying to test both the app and responsive options. I have been using responsive designs for some good time and thought I would give the app version a try. However, responsive seems to be leading still thus meaning that it is still the best.

You haven't tried App, but if you are giving thumb up to RD, then it maybe good too.
Do inform your experience with RD when you have it.

Personally for me I prefer to have an app for myself but it all depends on one's site. It better to go for what will progress the site and not necessarily what is trending.

for online earning purposes, I like responsive design more because apps can usually get many rights of your phone data and appliance permissions
