ToTW Forum management

Postby sweerie_banana » 15 Apr 2025, 13:06

What’s the best way to explain the “vibe” of your forum to new members? I want people to feel at home without writing a giant rules list. Have you used pinned posts or welcome messages that worked? I’m trying to keep it light but clear. I would love to see examples if anyone’s willing to share.

I have been sending welcome to ForumCoin pm messages to new members as they arrive for several years. Not sure if they help or hurt. Sometimes they contribute a single post the day they join and I add something that relates to that single topic.

At any rate, this is a copy of a recent welcome pm I sent out to a new member:

Welcome to ForumCoin

Hi,

Noticed you recently jumped on board and wanted to personally welcome you and give you a few tips to get you rolling.

This is a very friendly group who participates on a wide range of topics. You are encouraged to post your own new topics based on your personal interests as often as you like. We do ask that you pay attention to the forum sections and post your topics in the appropriate sections.

Yes, this is a pay per post site, but it is also an opportunity to promote your own business offers with ads posted in the appropriate sections. The payment per post is more of a small token gesture of appreciation for your contribution than any serious offer to earn much. Those who make a point of advertising your own offers earn far more than those who just post content. The content is more the flypaper to attract viewers to the ads so please be sure to provide high quality content that adds value to each topic. Avoid useless drivel.

Fergal, the site owner, has provided a single topic that includes a range of topics all about ForumCoin to help guide members as you navigate the site. If you plan to stick around, it is a good one to save as a favorite you can refer to as often as needed to help you with questions about ForumCoin. There are also a few posts there for some quick added earnings just for completing the questions.
Useful ForumCoin Links
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=38237

There are thousands of topics to choose from and many ways to find topics of personal interest. The link labeled New Posts includes topics involved in discussions over the latest week. It is a mix of everything new and old and is sorted by the latest contributions as they come up. New topics blend in with older topics that have been brought back to the surface and they move along to the latest post in 7 days and then drop off to the site archives.

You can use the small magnifying glass icon in the upper right corner of the page to search for topics you want to discuss and bring them back for further discussions in that same list for the week.

The Unanswered Posts link displays topics that have not yet received any replies. Very few recent topics remain there for long but you will also find ancient topics that have simply been ignored for years. Most past the first 20 topics are generally not worth looking at but you might find something of interest if you look.

I have personally been trying to encourage the site owner to change that Unanswered Posts link to a Newest Topics display so all recently posted new topics remain available past that first 7 day display, separated from all the older topics brought back for added reviews. In that effort, I have been recording all new topics as they come in and have been maintaining a separate topic listing all new topics that have been posted since late November 2024.

That page also includes links to researched content for suggested new forum sections about Crypto currencies and for Sports Topics that can be viewed from that same link. Feel free to catch up on all the latest new content from the past several months. Those new forum sections are under consideration to be added later this year.
1475 ForumCoin topics you have missed that are just waiting for your replies!

So welcome to ForumCoin already!

I sincerely wish you great success in your own online journey.

OldGuy

PS You will find that you are not yet able to respond or use the personal message system. You must first provide 20 posts to the site, but the pm system will automatically open for you on that 20th post. The delay is part of the site security system.

Invite new members to share a little about themselves in a designated thread or welcome area.

I think a lot of forum.owners know about this and they have a designated thread for new members introduction. I think members need to post more here to always welcome the new members and attend to their questions if any

Exactly, that's what I meant. It's the ongoing engagement from existing members that really makes a difference.

The easiest way is to create a “welcome corner” or pinned post that explains the vibe in simple terms. Include examples of the type of conversations you want to see and what’s off-limits. For example, you could say something like “Hey welcome! Here we laugh, share tips, but we respect each other. Feel free to join the conversation and ask questions.” Also, emojis and a friendly tone help people feel at home.
Instead of a long list of rules, people like a short, simple guide and example of how interactions happen on your forum.

To be honest the only thing I don't like about ForumCoin here or, for that matter, at any other forum is the rating system. People should be given a warning first before a direct negative rating. They should be told directly first and should be allowed to edit their post. If they don't edit their post after a warning. Then everyone has the absolute right to negatively rate the post. Direct negative ratings are extremely demotivating for the time one puts in the forum.

To be honest, the rating system on the forum is often annoying. Someone puts in the time and energy and then sees a negative rating right away without warning. It's like being kicked when you're not prepared. It's better if people are given a chance to fix the post first before the judgment. Because if you get a bad rating without explanation, it's disappointing and makes someone reduce their efforts.

It's like the story of Prometheus who was mercilessly chained to stones. A negative rating without warning is a prison that discourages you. But if you give a warning first, it's like giving them the keys to free themselves. If someone changes the post and it's still not right, then the negative rating becomes meaningful and the forum remains respectful and motivated for all.

I have limited experience with forums, I have in my entire life created just one forum and I failed miserably. These days it is really difficult to build regular members on forums
