I believe Amazon Prime will beat Netflix

Postby Netherrealmer » 05 Aug 2021, 11:12

Amazon Prime is not yet as globally available that they have one edge to Netflix. First you can use Amazon prime to make money via watch party. Then Netflix had been cancelling shows left and right, even if the show have a huge fan base they will cancel it. Amazon Prime cancels less shows and they even have patience to make new seasons of shows believing it will catch up. Amazon prime also have great originals that can compete with Netflix.

Not going to happen.

I'm subscribed to both and Netflix wins hands down in terms of content. There's more variety and more original content. Yes, they do cancel a lot, but they also produce a lot which evens it out. Their originals are way more popular than Amazon originals.

Amazon does have good content, but a lot of the stuff is old/not original. No one subscribes to Prime Video exclusively for the streaming content. I would say 90% of the people subscribe to Amazon for free shipping and Prime perks and Prime video just happens to come with it.

The only streaming service that might be able to beat Netflix at the moment would be Hulu. They have a good library of shows, their originals are quite popular, and they're now part of Disney. Depending on how the next few years go, they might be able to become #1.

A library of incomplete series. Some fans are already leaving to a different platform once their shows got canceled. It will be a slow burn death.

I agree. I am also subscribed to both and hardly ever watch Prime. Anything worth watching they want you to pay for and in terms of variety they are way behind Netflix. I only have prime for next day delivery and if Prime videos disappeared tomorrow I wouldn't even notice. Hulu isn't available to my country so I can't comment but I have heard it's a popular platform.

Fans are always coming and leaving. As long as they continue to put out content, fans will return. Overall, Netflix's doing very well despite its cancellation rate. Every streaming platform/network needs to cancel shows to survive. Some shows are amazing, but do not have a big fanbase. Some shows are trash, but have a huge fanbase. In the end, if there's no profit, they can't continue the show. It's as simple as that. Amazon has a "lower" cancellation rate because they have less content to cancel. They have cancelled some of their shows even when the show ends with a cliffhanger. Once a show loses its potential to generate revenue, it will be on the chopping block. That's how it is for all platforms.

From what I've gathered, it goes Netflix>>Hulu>>>>>Disney+>>>>>>Prime>Peacock in the US, if we are talking about the big streaming platforms. You rarely hear any buzz about Amazon originals. I guess The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Boys are probably two of their most popular/well-known originals. But those cannot even compare to 2nd/3rd tier Netflix/Hulu originals in terms of popularity.

The Boys and Invincible is still better than recent Netflix originals like Jupiter Ascending and their Highly hated He-man revival. Most prime shows I follow got renewed while half of the Netflix shows I watch got canceled, I already lost confidence to them with their cancelations.

Again, Amazon cancels less because they produce less. It feels like Netflix cancels a lot, but their cancellation rate is still better than TV networks.

I can't comment on if Prime originals are "better" than Netflix's originals because each show is different and every one has their own preference. But it's a fact that Netflix has the most popular originals -- and by that, I mean shows that people talk about/like, shows that make big money for them. With the exception of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, hardly any of the other streaming giants have shows that even compare to Netflix's popularity.

I'm not dismissing the possibility that another streaming platform can beat Netflix in the future. But that platform won't be Prime Video unless something changes drastically in the next few years.

I had an account with Prime but no with Netflix. But I closed it as I hardly watch movies and although I nuy lot of stuff online the free delivery does not add up to the prime fee.

I forgot to mention that Prime Video's user interface is not as user-friendly as Netflix's. They need a better, easier to navigate interface. Hulu had a terrible interface a few years ago, but they fixed it (thank god) and I like it a lot more now.

Making money via watch party? Amazon Prime is much more affordable than Netflix.
It does not has as many movie base but is still catching up.
I watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull (2008) on it recently.

Actually, Prime Video (not Prime membership, just the video) and Netflix (basic plan) cost the same. Both are $8.99 in my country. I read that Amazon has 5x more movies/shows than Netflix, but Netflix has more original content. Also, a lot of the content on Prime Video aren't included with Prime. You can stream them, but you have to pay an additional subscription fee or buy the movie/film seperately.

Personally, my favorite streaming platform is currently Hulu. They have a lot of shows that I want to watch and I was able to subscribe at the low-price of $1.99 a month due to a Black Friday sale they had last year. Best value for money, in my opinion. I hope they have the same sale again this year.

We have Netflix and I like it because I get to see a lot of foreign movies and TV shows. Plus it's a bargain price. If Amazon Prime is going to be better and you say they have great originals, then that's probably how they will catch up and pass Netflix. The Netflix originals suck! Maybe other people like them but I keep wondering why they are wasting money.

There are good Netflix originals but the problem is they keep cancelling them for making shows like sexy beast.

and they just pissed of 80s kids by emasculating He-man in a recent reboot.

I am losing trust on them because they keep canceling shows I like. Glow have high ratings, won Emmys and praised by critics but they cancel it while they renewed Emily in Paris

The only Netflix originals that I have enjoyed are the Korean dramas. I just finished watching My Country the other day.

I also agree with you that Netflix originals aren't that great. The only Netflix original I love is The Queen's Gambit which is one of the best originals I've seen on any streaming platform, period.

But while Netflix cancels a lot, it does sometimes pull through to save a popular TV show. Yesterday they saved Manifest which has been gaining popularity since it started streaming on Netflix. I haven't seen the show, but I am willing to bet that if the show hadn't been streaming on Netflix, it would not have blown up big enough to get another season. So yeah, Netflix cancels a lot, but once in a while it does help give shows a second chance to continue on.

Do you have any info on this? My understanding was that Netflix was NOT picking up Manifest after all, but your information may be more recent than mine.

Netflix did, however, save the show Lucifer, which would have ended on FOX at Season 3 on a cliffhanger instead of finishing up with 6 seasons after Netflix picked it up. Then again, Prime also saved the show The Expanse after it was canceled on SyFy and have done an incredible job with it.

Yes, originally they passed on saving it because they wanted to focus on their own original series. Plus there was a licensing issue with the international streaming rights or something so Netflix said they wouldn't save it. But the series managed to maintain it's popularity for weeks so they changed their mind. Yesterday on 8/28 at 8:28 am, they announced that they would be renewing it for a 4th final season which would be 20 episodes.

The producer said the series was originally planned out for 6 seasons, but with 20 episodes, it's like we're getting 2 seasons (plus Netflix originals are usually 50+ minutes per episode, unlike 40 on the networks so some may even say we're getting all 3 seasons worth of airtime). Anyway, it's better than nothing since I heard season 3 ended with lots of unanswered questions. With 20 more episodes, it's enough for some closure. I'm happy for the fans and glad that Netflix is still saving shows.

It seems rare for a show to get saved these days as platforms are so focused on making their own shows. Plus when something gets cancelled, it's for a reason (budgeting, viewership, scheduling, etc.) so very few can justify saving a show going downhill. Manifest is a miracle and I hope there's more of these miracles to come.

They say you can get a job with Netflix, reviewing and rating content. So far when I have visited the site to look for job opportunities, they were not hiring for that position. But I would love a job like that! I don't think Amazon Prime ever advertised a job like that!
