Continuing Education : Vocabulary Words : 5 English Words That Begin With “UG” … “GU”

Postby cmoneyspinner » 29 Jun 2021, 23:03

This is my fifth and final post, continuing to have fun learning new English words.

This time it's only 5 English words that begin with “GU”.

This was tricky. The “GU” words were easy enough. But finding “UG” I did not already know was next to impossible. I gave up looking for them.

What I did was use the vowels … A, E, I, O, U.
~ Then the consonants in the order they appear in the alphabets.

Hence, my first post was AB … BA.

The second post was EC … CE.

The third post was ID … DI.

The fourth post was OF … FO.

Word, the definition and use it in a sentence.

■ 5 English words that begin with “GU”:

guano – deposits from droppings of sea birds, valuable as fertilizer, rich in nitrogen and phosphates; found especially on islands off the coast of Peru

Guano is often used as fertilizer and my grandmother insists it is the reason her garden is so beautiful, so she feeds the birds all the time.

guff – empty talk, either foolish or with intent to deceive

When it comes to most of the conspiracy theories that are being circulated via social media, I lump them and file them under the label “guff”.

gunwale – bulwarks (defensive wall or ramparts) supporting a ship's guns
(Many American citizens sing the National Anthem. Wonder how many know what the “ramparts” are. I didn't!)

"Gunwale" is defined as the uppermost edge of a ship's side; derived from the word "wale" which was the name for a plank on a boat and “gun” because it was a really handy place to mount a gun to defend the ships against attackers. (REF: NL-2016-10 Origin Gunwale - Houston Canoe Club)

gusset - a triangular piece of cloth inserted so as to widen or strengthen a garment; a reinforcing device

To hide the fact that she had gained a few pounds, Kim Kardashian wore a black dress which had been altered by adding a jeweled gusset and though unintentional, she became the envy of every woman who stepped onto the red carpet at the awards show.

gustatory – pertaining to the act of tasting or sense of taste

Although she survived the virus, her olfactory and gustatory capabilities were severely damaged and for several months, she could neither smell nor taste her food.

■ 5 English words that begin with “UG”:

I could not find a word beginning with “UG” that I did not already know, so I'm concluding my series with an expression that a friend and fellow co-worker taught me. He cautioned me not to behave in this manner if I ever traveled outside of the United States.

ugly American – an American abroad who does not appreciate the culture of the natives. The label was lifted from the title of a book jointly authored by Eugene Burdick (1918 – 1965) and William Lederer (1912 – 2009), “The Ugly American”.

The novel “The Ugly American” was publsihed in 1958 and in 1963, the book was adapted to film by Universal Pictures. Marlon Brando played the part of Ambassador Harrison Carter MacWhite. Ambassadors are supposed to be diplomats with the primary work of promoting goodwill between nations. Instead of trying to understand the people, the political upheavals and the social issues, he immediately wrote off the problem as a struggle between democracy and communism. If the rival factions in the Southeast Asian country would just embrace democracy, which, according to this ugly American, is the better form of government, their problems would be eliminated.

Since this movie is very old, you can watch it on YouTube. It's in English, but it has Spanish subtitles.

The Ugly American 1963 Marlon Brando, Sandra Church, Eiji Okada, Pat Hingle, Judson Pratt espagnol

If you ever come to Austin, Texas, don't miss the bats! We have quite a population. You might be able to get some free guano. :D
