Continuing Education : Vocabulary Words : 5 English Words That Begin With “OF” … “FO”

Postby cmoneyspinner » 26 Jun 2021, 00:24

This is my fourth article, continuing to have fun learning new English words.

This time it's 5 English words that begin with “OF” and 5 English words that begin with “FO”.

Word, the definition and use it in a sentence.

■ 5 English words that begin with “OF”:

Offa – King of Mercia (757 – 796 B.C.). His authority was recognized throughout England, south of the Humber, enabling him to claim the title “King of the English”

When questioned about the information sources relied upon to create the main character for his play titled “The King's Wife”, the playwright stated plainly that the wife of Offa was nothing more than a figment of his imagination.

offal – all parts of an animal which are removed from the carcass when it is dressed for food (the entrails of a butchered animal)
(Offal sounds awful!)

In order for the reader to visualize the squalid conditions of the old medieval city the novelist wrote that offal and dung were regularly thrown into the unpaved streets.

officinal – characterizing an approved medicine or drug stocked by dispensers

The sunflower is considered ornamental for home or garden, and sunflower seeds are both edible and officinal.

officious – offering unwanted advice or service; meddlesome

When I told my friend that she was being officious about my romantic relationships, she asked me to pass her the dictionary because she was not sure if she was being insulted or complimented. ;)

off-the-pig – a term once used for ready-made apparel, i.e. clothing you can buy off-the-rack

Fashion designers and clothes retailers immediately realized that using expressions like “off-the-pig” would drastically reduce revenue from sales of ready-made apparel.

■ 5 English words that begin with “FO”:

foco – a focal center of guerilla* power

“The foco theory of revolution by way of guerrilla warfare, also known as foquismo (Spanish: [foˈkismo]), was formulated by French intellectual and government official Régis Debray ...” (Quote Source)

EXTRA NOTE:
* guerilla – term first applied to the Spaniards who harassed Napoleon Bonaparte's army during the Peninsula War (war fought 1808 – 1814, in the Iberian Peninsula; part of the Napoleonic Wars); derived from the Spanish word “guerra” which means WAR!

folderol – useless ornament or accessory; trifle or nonsense

Folderol is an official Scrabble word and it's worth 62 points.

foliaceous – resembling an ordinary green leaf (form, texture, and mode of growth)

The reason nobody noticed that the expensive broach had fallen among the tree's branches was because its design was foliaceous.

NOTE: This word has a different meaning in mineralogy. Foliaceous designates a rock or a mineral aggregate in the form of lamellae. Learn more.

foulard – thin soft silk or silk and cotton material used for ties, scarves, trimmings, etc.; a lightweight printed fabric of silk, etc.

She may have been born in the 21st century but she enjoyed dressing in 50s fashion accessorizing her outfits with a foulard worn around her neck like Audrey Hepburn.

fovea – a small depression in the retina of the eye where visual acuity is highest.

The fovea is the region of the retina that produces the sharpest vision and the scientific phrase for the expression “blind spot” is “fovea centralis”.

I actually love eating offal. I love tripes and liver. I also love heart and tongue. The ones I will never eat will be the reproduction stuff.

I also like tripe, liver, heart, chitterlings. But I don't like tongue. Maybe my mom just didn't know how to cook it. :? I watched Jacques Pepin prepare it one time on his cooking show. By the time he was finished, I was tired just watching him. So I know I will never learn how to cook it. I don't like dishes that require effort. :D

I really liked "off-the-pig." Is this expression still in use? I mean can I use it in everyday communication?
