Continuing Education : Vocabulary Words : 5 English Words That Begin With “ID” … “DI”

Postby cmoneyspinner » 07 Jun 2021, 00:40

This is my third post, continuing to have fun learning new English words.

This time it's 5 English words that begin with “ID” and 5 English words that begin with “DI”.

I state the word, the definition and use it in a sentence.

■ 5 English words that begin with “ID”:

identic – a communication made in precisely the same terms by each of several governments to another; constituting a diplomatic action or diplomatic language in which two or more governments agree to use the same forms in their relations with other governments.

The governments of Russia and the United States have never used oral or written agreements or any form of communication with each other that were identic.

idiopathy – disease which is not caused or preceded by another disease (i.e. a disease whose cause is unknown)

COVID-19 should be filed under the label “idiopathy” until researchers and investigators determine its cause.

idiot board – a teleprompter

Government staff who were responsible for preparing speeches opted for the president to use an idiot board for public speaking events rather than relying on him to read or memorize his speech.

idiotype – property of an antibody new to the body that creates anti-genicity and is unique among antigens (Example: A vaccine is an antigen.)

The word 'idiotype' is in the Scrabble dictionary and it could result in a score of 14 points. :D

idocrase – vesuvianite: a brown or green double silicate of aluminum and calcium, colored by traces of iron, first found in the ejections of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that erupted in 79 A.D., that destroyed the ancient Roman towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum

In geology, idocrase is included in the group of skarn minerals; and according to the IGS (International Gem Society) it is one of the lesser known and more beautiful collector gems.

■ 5 English words that begin with “ID”:

diastrophism – the process of upheavel which has wrinkled the earth's crust, forming mountains, ocean beds, etc.; (geology) the deformation of the Earth's crust to form the continents, mountains and other large features.

Scientists say that several million years ago, Yosemite National Park lay beneath the sea and it exist as it is today because of diastrophism; which is an interesting conclusion since the biblical story of the flood says that all of the earth was under the sea. ;)

dirigible – (of balloons and airships) capable of being guided or steered

Dirigibles, zeppelins, and blimps are all airships but they were not created equally. (Source)

dirndl – an Alpine peasant dress with close-fitting bodice and full skirt (usually colorful or worked), gathered at the waist

The results of a survey revealed that some American men have a fantasy about their wives serving them drinks wearing a dirndl, which is probably why St Pauli Girl beer is such a popular brand.

divagate – to ramble or digress
(NOTE: If you thought it was a gate that divas walked through, so did I. It's an honest mistake! )

When political leaders want to avoid agreeing on solutions to difficult social issues, they often divagate when asked a straight-forward questions.

divaricate – to divide into two branches

The Thesaurus shows almost 40 synonyms and all of those words are a lot easier to say than the word “divaricate”.

I did not know a teleprompter was also called idiot board. But how did it get its name? was it due to the TV being called the idiot box?

That's true. And some people completely disregard the idiot board even though they were told to read from it. The late Michael Jackson's son was accepting an award on behalf of his father. The idiot board was saying one thing. But the kid was saying something different. I rather liked his tribute to his father. The program was live so they couldn't stop him! He said what he wanted to say. You go son! <3 :D

I think sure teleprompter was the official name and "idiot board" was more like a slang or unofficial term. I think. :D
