Alternate Sweeteners that is better for you

Postby Netherrealmer » 15 Jul 2020, 16:19

 We all love the Sweetness of Sugar, especially the white one.
Image

People on a diet and people with diabetes have to let go of their cravings of those pure as snow crystals because these crystals killed more people Alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. Heck Marijuana have non existent fatality rate and have health benefits but it's illegal yet White Sugar, A poison that killed billions of people is still legal.

I do not recommend artificial sweeteners though because they are made of harmful chemicals.

Honey-
Image I know Vegans don't want to use Honey because its an animal product but Bee farming is more helpful for bees because they can live in a world with less dangers from pesticides and predators. Bees are currently in danger and farming them actually helps their population. Both wild bees and farmed bees helps the environment via pollination. It is lower in fructose. I won't recommend honey for babies and diabetics though. Diabetics can use honey but in moderation but it can be harmful for them too. It can cause botulism to babies so I won't recommend honey for them. if you are not diabetic though, it is one of the best prevention sweeteners out there.

Raw Sugar
Image

Do not confuse raw sugar from brown sugar just because they have the same color. Brown Sugar is basically white sugar with molasses to have this caramel flavor. So it is not healthy. Raw Sugar is sugar in purest form, A sugar that is not processed to look white. It's basically a healthier sugar because it has low glycemic index. The flavor of Raw sugar and brown sugar is similar but raw sugar is more intense and has a smokier flavor which makes it a popular ingredient for barbecue. You can use it to make bread but not that delicious for drinks and cakes. It is healthier though.

Coconut Sugar-
Image
It has lower Glycemic index and calories just like everyone on the list but the taste and texture reminds me of brown sugar. If you love earthy and smoky flavor you may like this.

Stevia - One of the most popular natural sweeteners out there.
Image It is a herb that grows from Brazil and it is turned into fine powder. You can use it to sweeten your coffee, tea, cakes bread etc. The sweetness is hard to get use to in the beginning because it has medicinal aftertaste but once you get used to it, It won't disturb you anymore. Stevia have low glycemic index and lower calories. You can either buy the powder or plant the herb in your garden yourself. One or 2 leaf is enough to sweeten a cup of tea!

Monk fruit
Image

A Monk fruit is a kind of melon that grows from China and Thailand. It is sweeter than white sugar but it has lower glycemic index, It has vitamins like most fruits do and it is slow in calories.

You can buy it as powder

or as Crystals.
Image

The Chinese government make it illegal to export Monk fruit seeds so they won't have competition but Thailand managed to grow some of their own. I buy the ones from Thailand. Thailand refuses to sell seeds too.

Why Monk fruit is popular! It tasted exactly like white sugar! Minus the diabetes risk and after taste of other sweeteners. You can make Meringues with it too since the Monk fruit crystals have the same texture with white sugar.

Beet Sugar

Image
Image

Beet Sugar is made of the the vegetable sugar beets. Which is amazing because sugar beets tasted like potatoes to me but somehow they can make sweeteners out of them. Beet sugar is low in calories and glycemic index too but it is high in antioxidant. Texture Wise reminds me of sugar too. Most diabetic cake and pastry shops uses Beet Sugar.

Sugar, especially refined white sugar is poisonous and highly addictive. I haven't used it for a few years now and actually enjoy my coffee strong and creamy minus the sweetness. Tea, however, is another ballgame altogether. I find no matter how creamy, it has this bitter after taste that needs to be balanced with a sweet agent to make it pleasant. So I use a bit of honey in my tea.

There's another good sugar substitute called Xylitol. The only problem is that it is pricey and can cause tummy cramps and a runny tummy. But in terms of taste, it's fantastic.

I avoid sugar at all cost, from the natural sweeters you mentioned the only one I didn't know was sugar from monk fruit, maybe because we don't have that fruit here.

You can find them in health stores, they are quite expensive. I buy the Thai Variety for human rights reasons.

I'm perfectly fine with using sugar alternatives. But when I was growing up the only sugar alternative I knew about was saccharin. It's what my father used because he was diabetic. I tried it and did not like the taste. I used sugar for almost 50 years. About 10 years ago is when I started trying Splenda, Sweet-n-Low, Stevia and the other alternatives. For my health, I can get used to the taste of the alternatives; although truth be told I really like regular old white sugar. :D

Yes, you have a point there when you say that marijuana, which has health benefits is banned whereas white sugar, which has killed billions, goes scot free. As far as the alternatives that you have mentioned are concerned, Stevia was the only one I was aware about, and of course natural honey, but the others, I am hearing about them for first time, especially the sugar from beets - thanks for the information.

I prefer to add brown sugar or honey into my beverages instead of white sugar. Sea coconut drink taste sweet even without adding sugar. Recently i cut off sugar because planning to go for medical exam this weekend.

You mean raw sugar, Brown sugar is white sugar with Molasses. I know many people confuses them as the same due to similar color.

Aah. Sugar is really addictive and I am struggling in avoiding sugary or sweet foods. But perhaps, I might try your suggested alternatives like honey to combat this sugar addiction.

I am a diabetic and like to eat oatmeal for breakfast, but to sweeten it I can add a whole tablespoon of Mrs. Butterworth's Sugar Free Maple Syrup at a cost of only 2 grams of carbohydrates and 5 calories for a rich tasty flavor I enjoy.

Most of the alternatives are just horrible in terms of taste. I just wish Xylitol, which tastes exactly like sugar, was kinder on the tummy and less expensive. So, I've decided to take my coffee very creamy with no sugar and that's working out great. For my tea, I now use organic/raw honey or argave.

Yes, sadly. But the reason why marijuana cannot kill is because our body cannot handle the high amount of THC, which is a chemical component that makes MJ addictive. Users are more likely to pass out before reaching overdosing. However, MJ can detach users from reality or make them hallucinate that can lead to a reckless action, which might kill them.

It is now legal in many countries since doesn't really increase crime rate. Also most Marijuana users I met are not violent at all. They are happy artistic hippies. All claims against marijuana are fabricated by a 1940's movie that wants Mexicans out of the US and they notice Mexicans use Marijuana so they demonetized it.

Beet sugar and Monk fruit looks the most promising. I do use white sugar, but try to keep it on a lower side. Unfortunately not everyone in the family thinks on similar terms.
We also have jaggery but still we do not use it that much.

From what I know Jaggery is a candied form of pure cane sugar, So its basically raw sugar and its better than white sugar as well.

I still like the normal white sugar even though it's not a healthier option but many times I substitute my sugar with honey.

That is true, most alternatives to sugar are awful, aspartame for example has a sickening sweet taste, it is horrible.
Lately I have been using coconut sugar but I also take my coffee black and I add no sugar in my tea, I think sugar doesn't let us taste tea's flavors.

Is it the same as brown sugar?
