I think that sort of approach got many of the sites closed. So I don't think it's often the issue with websites but often with the members.
I agree to a degree, depending on the site. Some members do pull-down and cause the demise of many a site. I think it stems mainly from greed and the need for instant gratification. While it didn't necessarily bring down PostLoop, I observed it on some of the forums with fewer points. Some members would rush to post as fast as they could just so they could earn, thus disregarding the need to maintain the quality of their posts. You soon saw a few of the forums disappearing because of this attitude, sadly

People just don't seem to learn.
