Though it is not good for long term plans. The reason being that whenever domains are made free, that is only for a specific time period. Renewal costs (if you want to use it more) is always bigger than the standard. So, do a valid comparison.
Calculate the cost for 5 - 10 years and compare then. This is a standard time for sustenance of most of the websites. If you find that website is not profitable in 5 - 10 years, you have the option to discontinue.
But, if your plan is not that big and you want to start and finish a project in 1st year itself then a free domain is very good. Otherwise,it is better to search elsewhere.
