Sea Turtle species affected by MicroPlastics

Postby ptrikha21 » 09 Dec 2018, 13:59

Plastics have been very convenient to the human species in many respects. Yet same plastics when disposed, contribute to damaging nature and living organisms.
In a study by a Laboratory in UK, a very sad but not a very unpredictable fact has come to the light. In a research spanning 3 oceans and all the 7 Sea Turtle species, it has been found that Micro plastics were found in all of the 102 tested Turtles, especially fibre. So far the amount has been calculated just for the gut of these creatures. Actual amount could be much more.
I feel sorry for these creatures and the pain that they must be going through.

This news is much dismaying. Those sea creatures are like humans. They are entitled to be protected in order for them to live. They are part and parcel of the ecosystem. They have role to play to make us live, to make our sea environment worth as a source of foods. Destroying those turtles would be a crime I should say if there is a law of punishing the killing of those creatures.

We as human have done so much damage to ecosystem with our irresponsible acts. It is a big shame that we are so insensitive towards environment and other living beings.

Yes, such news is of serious concern and a lot more efforts need to be taken internationally to help these sea creatures.

Unfortunately it affects all the species, not only all the creatures in the ocean but also birds and other land animals. Humankind is destroying the only house that was given to us, people can dream of living in Mars or other planet but what humankind should be really concern is with this planet, Earth is what the Bible refers as Eden, it was given to us with all that we needed to live well and happy but people did not understand it and now it is too late, because the planet is doing what it is need to survive and believe it or not next year you can expect many earthquakes (they are happening already on the ocean floor), Tsunamis, the weather going to extremes from high temperatures to very low ones, etc.

Being a Vet I know in India we have many cattle including cows and buffaloes which consume plastic and that dwellings in the stomachs of these animals. When the quantity accumulated become s too much the we need to remove that by performing surgery! Yes, plastic is a big culprit for the animals may then they may live on land or in water! :(

Darkthorn - very valid concerns and we need to fix a lot of things on this planet.
AKRao - as a Vet you can understand how many pains animals fed on deadly plastics undergo - it is a matter of concern and serious action.

We don't have sea turtles in our place. Nevertheless, the use of microplastics should be regulated or be banned permanently. These sea animals are contributing to the balance of ecosystem which is very beneficial to the humans. Therefore, they should be protected or else we will be eventually suffered at the end.
