Do You Celebrate Winter Solstice?

Postby cmoneyspinner » 17 Dec 2017, 23:18

I don't celebrate winter solstice but have finally satisfied my curiosity by doing a little research on a topic I hear people talk about and reference a lot.

Sharing a link to an interesting write-up found in the online Encyclopedia Brittanica, Written By Alison Eldridge.
7 Winter Solstice Celebrations From Around the World

Did you know?
"Old solstice traditions have influenced holidays we celebrate now, such as Christmas and Hanukkah."

Do you celebrate winter solstice?

WINTER SOLSTICE: The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs annually between December 20 and December 23.

We do. We have the stepkids here every single Christmas, so the Solstice/Yule is when I can do some of our quieter celebrating. :D

This is the first time I have ever heard about Winter Solace. I have learnt something new today. I think discussion boards are helping to learn about new things!

I celebrate both. Christmas with my family and the solstice by myself. :)

So far the responses are mixed. I see there are some who are not even familiar with this celebration. I'm curious to know what people do. Is it more gift giving? Is it a meal? Is there a special service? Are there songs associated with the celebration? I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on any fun!

Yum! Sounds delicious. I have just recently learned about rice balls. When people say sweet soup I usually think of a soup with lots of sweet corn in it. Do you have a particular recipe for your sweet soup?

Winter could be beautiful sometimes but I prefer summer and spring. I don't celebrate the Winter solstice, it is not a tradition in my country.

I make a pot of wassail in the slow cooker and we sip it all day. At sunset we light a fire and bang on pots & pans outside to frighten the dark away/wake up the sun. I make a big roast dinner and a cake (a Buche de Noel is traditional, but complicated to make).

Mine is cobbled together from a few different ones. I make a non-alcoholic version, although many of the traditional recipes have a lot of booze.

I scoop the core out of some apples (not the whole way through), stuff them with sugar, put a bunch of cloves in an orange, and then roast all of the fruit for half an hour. Then I put the roasted fruit in a gallon of cider with some cinnamon sticks, allspice, some pieces of crystallized ginger, a few pieces of star anise, and then I grate some nutmeg over it all. If I have some on hand, I throw in some fresh or frozen cranberries too. I let it simmer on low all day long, and we just serve ourselves when we want some. The longer it simmers, the better it gets.
