Setting up a forum is something I wouldn't even contemplate. I think it would be far too much work for one person to have to keep a watch on everything that's posted there just to ensure that members don't post plagiarised or inappropriate content.

I did it years ago with two other people. It was political, so not intended to make money. It was a ton of work. You have to stay on top of it all the time. In one day, one jerk can wreak havoc if someone isn't around to step in quickly. Making sure nothing inappropriate gets posted (or stays posted) is also a big job. Keeping the peace on a political forum is exhausting.

That's what I feared might happen.

I try to avoid discussing anything controversial online because I'm scared of how other people will react. I once posted a controversial question in HubPages' Q&A section and somebody was so adamant that my view was wrong that I ended up ignoring that question altogether because I wasn't up for a fight.

Well, I don't mind a bit of controversy. I don't want to fight, but I am always up for a good debate. You are entitled to your opinion as much as anyone else is.

I know that. I guess it's lack of self confidence that makes me avoid controversy.

I'm not surprised you backed down, Gina145...It was also probably for the best in that scenario because I've heard that the HubPages lot can be vicious. While I'm like thisnthat in that I love a good debate, some people actually lose sight of the fact that all opinions matter and ought to be respected. The types of people who believe theirs is the only view that matters. Sometimes even I back off in that sort of situation because there are people out there who just can't be reasoned with, sadly.

I don't blame anyone for backing off as they see fit.

I was offering some reassurance. :D

All too true. Some can't see past their own noses.

Others are quite good at a rousing debate, and I love that.

@Gina145
@Angie10
@thisnthat

:lol: The folks at HUBPages can get into some pretty heated conversations. I don't much spend my time there. It has nothing to do with avoiding controversy. Correct me if I'm wrong. You can earn from your HUBs, but you don't really get paid for contributing your "two cents" in the HP discussions. Right? So if I'm going to get yelled at for expressing my opinions, I might as well go to a forum or online community where I can earn a few pennies for engaging in a controversy. When I think of all the years my husband and I butted heads and I got nothing. I could have been butting heads with somebody I don't sleep with and getting paid for it!

O no, I didn't say that in reference to what you said LOL In fact, I was just adding to it to say sometimes I have the fight sucked out of me because some of these trolls are like a dog with a bone and because they just have to have the last word, I opt to let them have that rather than engage in a mud slinging session with them. I, like you, enjoy a good debate but only with reasonable people like you and most of the FC community. There are places where I tread very carefully.

I didn't take it that way. I was agreeing with your perspective.

Right, but the controversial topic was a discussion I started in the "questions and answers" section. HubPages doesn't pay for views in that section, but AdSense does, or at least they did at the time. I'm so rarely active at HubPages that I haven't checked to see if they've made any changes lately.

* * Oh my! So I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face! I didn't even think about the revenue-share aspect. DUH!! :crazy: Silly me! Now I'm looking at the HubPages Q&A section a little bit differently. I think I'll go back and check to see if participating would increase my AdSense earnings because I do earn from AdSense with the HP revenue-share plan. I thought it was just for my HUBs.

Also, did you get an eMail from HUBPages about discontinuing the half-sized images?

I went into the dashboard and changed all the images for my HUBs to full size. They say you get 90 days to make the changes. But as soon as I got the message, I edited my HUBs right away! And the strangest thing happened! I got two more emails a day or two later giving me a heads-up, saying that two of my HUBs might become featured. Don't know if they meant featured in one of their niche magazines or just featured. Anyway! I'll wait and see.

TGIF! Are you having a good day my sweet South African sister? <3 :D

Friday was ordinary but today was good - a full day of bonsai demonstrations and talks. Meetings like that don't happen very often. Hope you're having a good weekend too. :D

Yes, I got the email from HubPages but I haven't bothered to do anything about it yet. I guess I'll have to find some time for it. It would be nice if some of my old Hubs would get featured again.

* * I got a big surprise in my eMail. When I first started writing for HUBPages, I thought it was going to be a steady income stream. Then all the cha ... cha ... cha ... changes. I left my HUBs published, but actually stopped checking my earnings. I got an eMail saying I received a payment! :$: :$: I was so surprised!! Didn't even realize I had reached the pay out. It's been a pretty good week for me. :)

I've been paid once, but that was a long time ago. I haven't checked my balance lately but I doubt I'll be paid again anytime soon. Not unless I can somehow come up with a new Hub which attracts a bigger audience than my existing ones do, and that seems unlikely. My last Hub was about BlogJob (when the site was still paying) and though it got Editor's Choice at the time, it's never received a lot of views.

I looked at one of my old Hubs last night with a view to editing the photos, but they're not available in a large enough size and I'm not sure it's worth the effort of creating a collage for that one, especially with the need for attribution for those photos. The post in question never received many views and is years out of date. I may limit myself to editing the Hubs that are still featured.

Incredible! A HUB that was Editor's Choice? I've never had a HUB that was picked by the Editors. Here you have one and it's about a site that you can't even recommend anymore. It almost makes you want to ask the Editors if they can't look at some of your other HUBs, turn the light off on the BlogJob HUB and shine the light on a different HUB. It's like you can't win for losing. :?

If I were you I would definitely limit my editing to the HUBs that are Featured.

HubPages did away with Editor's Choice a while back so I don't even have that badge to show for it any more. Strangely that Hub is one of my few that is still featured, even though it's no use to anyone now that BlogJob isn't accepting new members.

I've just noticed I'm down to four featured Hubs so that won't take too much editing. Maybe I'll see if some of the others are worth updating, and it might be a good idea to delete the ones that are totally out of date.
