Medical transcription jobs

Postby Decentlady » 13 Jul 2016, 11:09

Can anyone tell in details exactly what is expected from a medical transcriptor? What's the job description and how is the pay like? Do you really need a certificate to work or anyone of us can take up that job?

I've never worked for a medical transcription site.
However, I know that, to make good earnings, one needs to have a background in medicine/medical field.
This helps one to understand and work with medical terminology.

I've never personally done it, but I've heard it pays better than normal transcription work. I don't know whether there are any specific skills you need, but I'm sure they'd stand you in good stead. I've also heard it's not the easiest of jobs, which is where the medical background would come in, I guess.

I am not sure if the qualification is the same in different country as I experienced having 2 months training for medical transcription way back before as a part time job. We had a training, first they only look for people who are inclined with medical field, nursing, medical technology and the like. I am not a nursing graduate nor medtech, but they able to allow me to train because of having the skill of fast typing. It is hard because you need to memorize medical terms, you need to know how to use the device so that while doing the transcription, you can rewind the recorder. They have their own terms there, the thing that you will step your one foot and it will rewind the recorder something like that. You need to also be aware of your grammar.

Mostly the recorded comes from a doctor, it is a voice recorded of doctors about a patients medical situation or procedure, something like that. You better be careful with it because one mistake can danger the lives of a patient. I worked there 6 months after 2 months training, I gave up, it was really challenging for me and I know I got scared  , i was just 21 during that time.

WEll explained. I believe you just answered the question as expected. I am myself scared of the transcription jobs since the recordedings are mostly from the Engish accents I find hard to understand.

There was a time when I considered working as a medical transcriptionist; because, I thought I would be able to do it at home.

I know there is specialized training where you must learn medical terminology and I know you must be FAST and accurate in your ability to transcribe. I have the potential to be accurate; however, I knew I wouldn't meet the speed requirement so...

I decided to consider other options.

I worked as a medical transcriptionist for two years some years ago. I was selected for the job because I am a bio graduate and had good typing skills and qualified after an audio test. We were trained rigorously in medical and pharmacological terminology for 6 weeks and only after we passed a written test, were we inducted in the company. You don't have to have a special certificate to do this job but you need to have good hearing, typing skills, good knowledge of English and familiarity with medical terms. I did not do any home transcription jobs as it is quite tedious since a very calm and quiet atmosphere needed for doing work may be hard to find at home. But the pay is good if you stick to it and can manage your work for a few hours consistently on a daily basis.

One thing, the pay is good. It is a very hard, challenging job, but the pay is good. I worked as a part time job but my part time job earning is the same as my full time job. I tried this week for 6 months, I stayed in the company for 8 months in total but it was very challenging, however, my co-worker said we will be learning a lot and we can get used to be working on it and that is what I did not consider before, my bad.

I couldn't do it because in as much as I have all the other skills, typing fast and accurately is where I fall flat on my face LOL I worked for years in a contact centre where I had to deal with all sorts of accents from around the world, and have great listening skills. But I'd have to stop and start all the time, slowing me right down. So I don't reckon my employer would be very happy with that. Plus I don't think I'd want to deal with anything medical at all.

My nieces is a medical transcriber for more than 10 years now. She works at home and doing her work by writing down what she hears from the audio clips that are sent to her via email. The audio clips are usually interviews of doctor with his patients. My niece has a degree in physical therapy. She says that only people in the medical field are qualified (maybe because of the familiarity with the medical terms).

It is refreshing to hear that you chose to quit based on ethical considerations.
You may not know it; but you are a priceless gem.
The world does not have many people like you.
Kudos! :)

Yes, the pay is really good if you stick to it. But the job is very demanding to, for example, you need very high levels of concentration and you have to have a very acute hearing. Many doctors have really bad accents and are in so much hurry to complete their dictation that they use really horrible phrases that are extremely hard to decipher. With such files, you can get heavy headaches. That is why I too gave up after two years, could not cope with the stress.

Thank you guys for the great information. Okay so lets say I fit into all these requirements. Where do I look for such jobs? What did you mean by a company? Offline ot online? I want to work from home as some of you have mentioned part time. I would prefer recorded emails rather than live.

Everytime I start my day at work, during my medical transcription days, I was haggard and stressed because I have my day job before it. It was just my part time job. I made a lot of mistakes with the medical terms although I know I had train for that. I got scared, really became coward because one mistake could bring a big danger to the diagnosis/prognosis area, so I quit. Some can do the job easily, I better not force to earn there for money sake because my conscience cannot take if something wrong will happen.

Oh I read this late. Thank you for that. I just need to accept that there are things I could not do for the sake of earning money. I just wish to be on the comfortable side of earning because my conscience cannot take it for sure.

As a medical transcriptionist you are expected to type out the conversations of healthcare professionals, mostly between a doctor and a patient. Hospital authorities use your file for insurance claims as in foreign countries hospitalization is only through insurance. There is a high demand for this profession and yes, you need to undergo a training in a reputed company and get certified.

I heard that they pay in range of 80 paise per line, but I think it is a low paid profession (may be I am wrong). But there are a lot of job opportunities and you can even join a company as their employee.

i ran into a website called transcribeteam.com before. I havent completed the registration cause it was too long.

From what ive gathered, its an edge if you know a lot of medical terms and can type faster than normal.
