What makes you watch a movie?

Postby arunima » 17 Jul 2025, 08:37

I have met fans of superstars like Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan here in India. They are crazy about these superstars and won't mind spending their time and money to watch any movies of these superstars, even if the movie is a great disappointment on all fronts. This kind of craziness has made many movies a great hit despite not deserving to be one. Sometimes the marketing strategies attract viewers and the movie sells despite lacking the features of a good quality film. On the contrary, many good cinema as failed due to not so popular actors ( though they did a fantastic job) and not an exuberant marketing and promotion.
I watch movies that are well made and are a good entertainers. I can watch romance, action, comedy, historical drama, based on biographies and autobiographies as long as they are well made and well delivered. I am not into stardom worshipping or crazy fan club. As long as I find it good, I will watch it. I just can't withstand excessive violence and gore scenes ( many a tines they are not needed).
What about you? What makes you watch a movie and like it?

I watch movies mostly because of the plot, i don't really care much about who is acting, as long as the plot makes sense, and the acting is good, then am game.

The main things that will get my attention are if it has a director, writer or actor/s that I like, a cool concept, or a really good trailer.

I agree. Some of these people who are professionals and claim to be experts end up being so biased. They have other benefits in mind than the actual genuine reviews.
Is there any particular reason for you to avoid certain actors and directors?

Yes, trailer of a movie plays a key role. But at times these trailers can be misleading too.

It's possible for some to even be paid critics, so it's best to go with the regular audience.

They can, but that's unusual. A bad trailer is usually just one that spoils too much of the movie (like the one for Megan 2 I saw in the cinema which was so long that I felt like I'd almost seen the movie by the end of it). It's rare to get one that makes it seem like the movie will be different from what it's actually like. One I can think of was the trailer for a movie called 'Nothing'. It's an absurdist comedy but the trailer makes it look scary.

I also like movies with strong stories rather than just looking at the actors' faces. If you see that the story is well understood and the acting is good, then you have already had a meaningful entertainment. There are many movies that do not have big stars but leave a mark because of their content.

One does not have to know every actor's name to enjoy a movie. What carries weight is how the story is woven and how it touches your emotions. Even if there are small mistakes in the acting, you can still enjoy it. The main thing is to enter the world of the movie and live in it.

I only watch a movie if it has a good story and if there is something to learn about. I don't care about stars or celebrities. Blind following and devotion is not my part.

I'm also the same way, as long as the story is good and not boring then I'll stick with it. I don't have time to keep track of who has played it, but if the acting is good and the plot is captivating then I'll be in it until the end.

Big names don’t influence me much. If the story is strong and the direction is tight, that’s enough.
