Is cloud storage safer than keeping files on your computer?

Postby kat82 » 09 Sep 2025, 07:44

Cloud services allow you to save documents online, but some fear hacking. Others trust it more than local storage which can crash. Do you think cloud storage is the safest choice?

Online storage protects you from physical risks such as your computer being damaged, stolen, or data being lost due to natural disasters such as fire or flood. Companies that provide these services (like Google Drive or Dropbox) use modern security systems and backups to ensure that your data remains safe.

However, the biggest risk of online storage is related to network security. There is a possibility that your account will be hacked, or the company in question will be attacked by cybercriminals. Although these companies invest heavily in security, no system is foolproof.

The only reason why I upload in cloud is because I want to save space on my computer hardware.

Uploading to online storage is had for me expect a few documents as opposed to videos and photos which consume large data when doing uploading. Since data and Internet is costly, the only way to save is to stop online backups but only allowing a few documents that I store remotely.

Cloud storage helps with managing your space and it's safer in situations where something happens to your computer, you can simply access your files from your cloud storage.

It is safer to store online. But my issue uploading the files. When the files are heavy, it becomes even more complicated. Besides online also limits space unless you go for paid storage.

Very true, this is one reason I don't use cloud storage that often, the amount of data needed to move heavy files is something else.

And yet it is the same files that one needs to save. Data is over used and sometimes files end up failing to upload due to bad connection.
