I want to tell you something small but true.
For many years, I used to think staying healthy meant punishment. I thought it was for those people who wake up before the sun, run on dusty roads, eat boiled food with no oil or salt, and live like monks. That was never me. I liked sleeping in, I enjoyed tasty meals, and I honestly never liked doing things just because everyone was doing them.
But something happened. One morning, I just felt tired. Not tired like after a long walk — this one was different. I was tired of feeling heavy. Tired of waking up without energy. Tired of being unhappy in my own body. I looked at myself in the mirror and said, “Something has to change.” Not a big thing, but just one small thing at a time.
So, I started...First, I began drinking water when I woke up. Nothing fancy. Just a glass of clean water before touching my phone or doing anything else.
Then, I started moving around more. I never joined any gym. I just moved. I walked around my home, danced when washing dishes, stretched my legs when hanging clothes outside. My body felt less stiff. I was not chasing six-pack abs. I just wanted to breathe better.
Food was the next thing. I didn’t stop eating the meals I love. I only started eating them differently. Instead of fried everything, I added more greens. I still ate chapati, but now I also took pawpaw or avocado with it. I didn’t cut out all sugar. I just started listening to my body more. Some days I felt light. Some days I was full too fast. I let my body speak to me. It felt like we became friends again.
But the best change I made? I stopped talking badly to myself...You know that voice in your head that says, “You’re failing. You’re lazy. You’re not good enough”? I heard it every day. Until one day, I answered back. I told that voice, “I’m trying.” That day, I promised to speak to myself kindly. Like I would speak to a child or a close friend. It made a huge difference. My heart felt lighter.
Something else I started doing was sitting alone — quietly. No TV, no radio, no phone. Just me. But the peace I felt after… I went back the next day, and the next.
I listen to birds. I feel the sun on my skin. I even smile at the wind. It’s small things like that — free things — that make me feel alive.
I also started laughing more. I used to go whole days without one proper laugh. Now, I call that cousin of mine who always tells useless jokes. I watch those short funny videos. I laugh with neighbors at random things. When you laugh, something opens up inside. You feel warm, safe.
And about sleep — oh! I used to sleep at 2am for no good reason. Now, I try to rest early. No more scrolling endlessly on my phone. I wake up now with more energy. I no longer drag my feet.
I also stopped forcing friendships that made me feel drained. I choose peace now. I’ve learnt that health is not just food and muscles. It’s your peace, your mind, your joy.
Yes, even alone. I say well done. Because no one else knows how hard it is to change except me. And every small effort deserves a celebration.
So if you are reading this and feeling stuck or tired or unsure, just start small. Don’t wait for Monday. Don’t wait to buy new sports shoes. Don’t wait for a perfect time. Just start - even with one glass of water, or one happy song, or one quiet moment for yourself.
This is your body. This is your life. And you deserve to feel good in it
