Google Maps for space

Postby mrki444 » 27 May 2025, 19:16

One of the most popular Google services is Google Maps. People mostly use it for navigation, but some also use it to explore places they can't travel to. But did you know that there are also versions of Maps for Venus, the Moon, or Mars?

Of course, there are no buildings, houses, or streets there, but for nature lovers, the environment, and deserts are interesting. You can explore the craters of the Moon and the mountains of Mars. Did you know that the highest mountain peak in the Solar System is on Mars? Feel free to launch the services and start exploring planets close to us.

You can actually see labeled features like Valles Marineris and Gale Crater too. It’s kind of wild to realize we’ve mapped entire alien worlds in such detail. Great way to get kids (and adults) into astronomy and planetary science without needing a telescope

Have you ever looked at the moon through a telescope? It is amazing to see it and you can see a lot more detail than you can with the naked eye.

No I did not. We got small observatory but I am not sure is it in function or can we go there as visitors. It is inside local school yard so I guess night visits are not allowed.
