Over-The-Counter Pain Medicine

Postby Spontaneo » 23 Apr 2025, 01:57

Do you ever take OTC pain medicine?

Years ago, I would use aspirin for menstrual aches and pains.

Now I take ibuprofen only if I absolutely need to.

How about you?

Yes. I sometimes take Panadol for headaches. Ibuprofen is recommended for periods, not just for pain but because if you take it on the first day of your cycle it can actually reduce the amount of bleeding. Taken as directed these are very safe medications. They're only dangerous if you take too much or take them too often.

Didn't everybody in the world take aspirin before Tylenol?
Didn't everybody use BenGay as a topical salve for muscle before they invented that icy patch?

What I like is that these days many meds that were only available by prescription are now OTC.

My late husband had acid reflux, but he needed to get a prescription from the doctor. Now, the same thing he used to need a prescription for is now an OTC drug.

A lot of drugs that were prescription only are now OTC. That's awesome!

Maybe everybody in the US? We don't have Tylenol in Australia. Is it paracetemol? The most popular brand of paracetamol here is Panadol. I don't know what BenGay is. I've only heard of it because it was mentioned on The Golden Girls.

I agree, it's good that we have access to relatively harmless medications that we need now.

So many women get severe urinary tract infections. Years ago, all that these women could do is drink cranberry juice. These days all that they need to have handy before the onset of such infection is OTC cranberry tablets! These cranberry tablets really do work and stops all symptoms.

Uumm ... when I visited the Bahamas with my late husband for the first time, Tylenol was the same as Panadol. I can't remember what the BenGay equivalent was.
