Dead butt syndrome

Postby mrki444 » 24 Apr 2025, 14:35

It sounds like a joke or a cheeky nickname, but "dead butt syndrome" really exists. And it can cause real problems. If you spend too much time sitting, it can have negative effects on the muscles of the body, especially the muscles of the buttocks.
It is a muscle dysfunction that affects the gluteus medius muscle, one of the three muscles that make up the gluteal muscle group.
This muscle plays a key role in stabilizing the hips and pelvis, and therefore in proper balance and posture.
When hours and hours are spent sitting, whether because of working at a computer, driving or watching television, dead butt syndrome occurs.

A sedentary lifestyle is the main cause of this syndrome, but its development can also be contributed to by incorrect posture, prolonged inactivity of this muscle, or training without targeted exercises.

The most common symptoms of dead butt syndrome include:
pain in the back
hips, and buttock muscles
numbness or tingling sensation
difficulty climbing stairs
balance and stability problems
discomfort when moving from a sitting to a standing position

This why we should often check new stuff from ergonomy so we can stop this funny but serious problem. Do you have some of this syndroms?

Maybe I would develop this syndrome, considering the amount of time I spend sitting and working in my desk job :D :D .

Solution for this is already known:
- take a break for few mintues every hour and walk, at least few steps
- do some squats
- don't neglect stretching
- tightening yout butt muscles when you sit from time to time

I have a sedentary lifestyle. I do try to be active especially the days I go to the office but at times, hectic work and multiple meetings mean that I do suffer a bit of back pain and pain in wrists (when I type more on the keyboard).
I will try to be more alert about being more active.

Lol, to avoid this, just develop a habit of taking breaks once in awhile and move around.

I don't think it is enough. Some excercise for butt or lower back should be included like 2 times per week.

I knew my butt was lazy but didn’t realize it was medically diagnosed. Time to tell HR I have a condition and need a standing desk ASAP
