This is an interesting idea, but not very popular in the US.

I happen to invest in precious metals and have a fairly nice pot at the end of my rainbow. I recently had an offer to take a gold backed loan, but I turned it down because I simply have no need for it.

During my exchange with my own favorite precious metals dealer, I learned some startling facts about precious metals investors in the US.

First startling fact - less than 2% of the entire US population even bothers to invest in any precious metals. Most have no idea of the actual value of any type of precious metal holding. That sort of explains why taking loans against your own holdings almost does not exist here. The only people who even have any personal holdings generally don't even need such a loan unless they experience some major disaster that goes beyond any cash holdings. There are apparently not many takers to any offers.

The second startling fact about personal investment holdings is that most who have made an effort to collect any precious metals hold less than 100 ounces of anything. Although there are a few individuals with multiple thousands of ounces, you actually pass into the top 1% of investors with just 500 ounces.

I know of no bank in the US who even could make such an offer. You might be able to get a loan at a precious metals dealer, but the only people going there are the 2% of the population who even makes such investments. All of that explains why loans against gold is almost unheard of in the US.

I don't even know how such loans are taken. And how they work. Is it a physical gold loan or digital gold loan.

I've never heard of this before. Then again, I keep hearing gold is a very good investment option. In all honesty, I wouldn't even know where to start if I wanted to invest in gold. Is it even affordable for the likes of us??

I regularly invest in precious metals and have been doing so for many years. The simple quick answer to whether you can afford it or not?

Gold is $2,894.05 (USD) per ounce and Silver is $32.36 per ounce right this moment. Most common sales is in one ounce increments. Those are what is called the "spot price", which is trader language for what they sell for on the open market. The spot price goes up and down almost every minute of the day, 24 hours per day around the globe.

They do make and sell precious metals in smaller increments, so you don't have to cough up for a full ounce all at once. I have some 1/20th ounce gold pieces and I have seen all the way down to 1/100th of an ounce pieces.

To give you some idea how small those pieces are, the 1 20th of an ounce pieces are slightly smaller than a typical fingernail and a tad bit thinner. They are so delicate they are exchanged in an individual plastic envelope for handling purposes. You could easily crush them like aluminum foil if you actually touched them. Each of those tiny little flecks of gold is worth about $170 at this moment.

Beware that “e-Gold”, “digital gold” or even Gold stocks ARE NOT the same as real gold. You would actually only be buying whatever they sell that represents gold in their marketing, but there is almost no real gold involved. Sources that make such offers often have less than one ounce of gold to back every 100 ounces they sell. Such offers are only backed by the source that is selling them in an attempt to manipulate real values. If they go broke, your investment goes up in smoke with nothing there.

Gold and silver jewelry is almost always only plated with the precious metal, but that plating is covering something other than gold or silver. You may have heard of 10, 14, 18 carat gold, but those are blends to make the item last longer. Gold and silver metals wear easily and added ingredients make them last longer but jewelry is NEVER pure and is not a good value for investments.

ONLY BUY REAL 0.999 PURE GOLD or SILVER (or other precious metals)– the metal itself that you can actually hold in your hand. Anything less is a smoke screen.

Now that you have some idea of what you might spend to invest in any precious metals, if you really have an interest in getting rolling, feel free to ask. I would be happy to help you get started, including warnings of what to watch out for to keep from getting scammed with fake metals.

I use this site to keep in touch with information about precious metals. It provides the current spot price for each of the precious metals and you can even subscribe to receive their frequent newsletters to learn a lot more about it. This is even where I buy all my inventory. I order it and they ship it to me.

The only hitch for you would be the shipping price. International shipping is extremely expensive. Shipping from the US could cost more than the product you might order. You would most likely be far better off to locate a dealer you could visit in your own region to make face to face purchases.

I'm not sure if it it the same as gold loan is the same as gold pawn which is more popular in our country. In gold pawn, the owner of the gold item surrender it to the broker as collateral to the loan acquired. There are several pawnshops in our country and many of them adopted other types of services such as money transfer and payment centers. I read about gold loan and it's almost similar to gold pawn. As per experience, there was a time when I need to bring my ring to a pawnshop to avail of a loan and they get hold of my ring until I paid the loan with an interest.

Same here with me. I don't like to live in anxiety, you continue to get nervous when the time is near which is too bad.
