I got a new job accidentally

Postby Fergal » 09 Feb 2025, 05:43

I like this Redit topic i got a new job, accidentally. There are good lessons in it for anyone considering their career. Don't self-reject, others may see potential in you that you are not aware of and they may recognize your ability to solve one of their problems. So be persistent, confident and open minded to improve your future.

Sort of funny, but this reminds me of one of my nephew's first job. He was not even looking for the job.

Fresh out of college with a degree in computer programming, he had been shopping for something and dealing on the phone with a live operator at the vendor. She was having some sort of problem with the order form and had called in a supervisor to complete the order.

As my nephew listened to the conversation between the operator and the supervisor, he could tell what they were talking about with the glitch. He began to give them some instruction to find and correct the issue. Seems they had been having this issue for quite sometime and their own IT Staff had not been able to get it corrected.

It was fixed! They were astounded. The supervisor asked my nephew where he was working and he explained he was fresh out of college and had not yet landed a job. They hired him immediately, starting at $50 K per year. No other interview, no background checks, no references. Just "When can you start?" He wasn't even looking for a job yet. Now that is an accidental new job!

Not a bad start for an income well above the norm at the time. That was back when a good salary was around $35 K per year for someone with experience.

I was quite a bit older and the situation was very different, but I was driven to advance my career and pestered the owner until he agreed to send me to a seminar for a week to learn more about package design (which is what I was doing for his company, He agreed until the week before I was to leave and came to me with the excuse that the company could not afford to send me this year, but maybe next year. I was devastated, but took a deep breath and went back to work. The straw that broke the Camel's back was the next day he drove in to work in his brand new Porsche 911 roadster and my next stop was to his desk where I quit my job and started my own company that continued for over 25 years that paid me 5 times what he did

Well it's not a direct comparison, but it blew into mind when I read this topic.

Wow! A light hearted story that is funny as well as inspiring in its own way. Well, the job was not offered accidentally to him. He could perform and show the skills that were required..The points taken are never to give up, never to underestimate oneself and keep trying. He did go with a minimum or no expectations, but he didn't compromise in delivering what was expected.

How is your nephew now? Is he retired?

I worked part-time jobs and had internships all throughout school. I wanted to become an attorney or a political writer. Between my high school/university sweetheart, work, studying, etc., I just wasn't good enough.

I applaud your nephew's achievement.
