Deepfake videocalls scamming seniors

Postby Netherrealmer » 10 Jan 2025, 10:00

Deepfake scammers are now targeting senior citizens, so it's essential to warn everyone to be cautious. These scammers investigate the families of senior citizens, trying to identify their children and grandchildren. They then use photos of these family members and animate them with deepfake technology. By reviewing videos of the family posted on social media, they can create convincing deepfake phone calls that sound exactly like the family member.

The scammers might call saying something like, "Mom, Dad, it's me. I got into a car accident," or "I got arrested. Please send money to pay my bills or bail." After that, they disappear. The video calls look incredibly realistic because they use animated photos of your son, daughter, or grandchildren, along with AI to imitate their voices. If the outfit looks familiar—like something you've seen in a previous picture—there's a significant chance it could be a deepfake.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member, ask them questions that only you and the real person would know. You can also ask them to show their hands, as many AI-generated images can display deformed hands. Another effective way to verify their identity is to message the real person. For example, if you get a video call from someone who claims to be your daughter, try messaging your actual daughter to confirm that the person calling you is truly her.

These deepfake video calls are alarmingly realistic, making it easy to believe you're speaking to a family member who is in need of money. Many senior citizens have already fallen victim to this scam, so it's crucial to stay vigilant.

That's a great warning, thanks Netherrealmer. I know an older person who received a voice message with a voice sounding exactly like her daughter's, saying she was in trouble and asking for money. Unfortunately, it was very realistic and she fell for the scam. It's sad that these scams have progressed even further and the scammers can use realistic video now.

This has been happening for quite some time in India. It's been few months of such scams and now there is warning circulated everywhere to caution the citizens. My sister in law got a similar call in November last year. They pretended to be police officer and said that their daughter os with them caught in some drug trafficking and some transfer to their bank account would save her. It was a video call and the person looked authentic police officer. My sister in law saw her daughter online on WhatsApp and she asked here where are you. She was in her college canteen with her friends

That's a really important issue to highlight. Deepfake scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and can be particularly harmful to senior citizens. These scammers often use deepfake technology to create realistic but fake videos or images of family members, making it difficult for seniors to distinguish between real and fake content.

To protect against these scams, it's crucial to verify the identity of the person contacting you through a secondary method, such as a phone call to a known number. Be cautious of urgent requests for money, especially if the request is made in an unusual manner

My mom's friend's husband who is a senior citizen has been duped by these deepfake audio call. The cases have become so prevalent and increasing in numbers here in India. Now, there is warning issued by the government. In fact when you make a call to someone, you will hear a warning message before you hear the ringtone. It's issued by Government of India to warn the citizens to stay safe from these scammers.

Scammers are getting smarter and smarter and the advancements in technology is misused by them. It's very important to keep talking about these scams to our family. Though all age groups can be fooled, the young adults and the elderly are easier targets. Have open communication with family and share these incidents. Have the awareness. Anything that seems fishy or too good to be believed has to be avoided.

To protect yourself from these scams, it's crucial to be vigilant and skeptical of unexpected requests for money or sensitive information, even if they appear to come from a trusted source. Always verify the identity of the person making the request through a different communication channel.

Younger people are target to. New type of scamm calls is in progress. They call you and most people answer with Yes?. That word is later used as confirmation to buy something in your name on webshops or telecommunication services.

Digital arrest is the new scam going on in our country with these deepfake videos. You get call from someone dressed up in police uniform saying that you are in digital arrest as your phone number has been found in some illegal transactions or your son/ daughter are involved in some illegal activities and they are in police custody. You need to pay some fine/ penalties before you are free from digital arrest and can leave your house. They sound and look so authentic. They have the face and voice of your loved ones.
They created panic and scammed some people. Now there is a widespread awareness about it on social media platforms like YouTube and various TV channels that there is nothing like a digital arrest.

When AI will become rampant, it would enter and impact every aspect of life and society, including the crime. Any technological advancements so far have been used by criminals too, so will be AI. One has to stay alert and not fall for it.

I must have received 50 calls in the last couple of months that a girl starts out with "Hi", but the AI is so bad my receiver hits the hook as a knee jerk reaction.

Who doesn't target senior citizens?

ATTN SENIORS!
We only have to be concerned about two things:
(1) Receiving our retirement check regularly while we live, and
(2) Having enough money saved to get buried so our family doesn't set up a GoFundMe to pay for our funeral!
We have lived too long to be treated like IDIOTS and depart this life like a FOOL!

I have already made them aware and always make them aware of any scam information so that they know in advance of what to expect when they receive any such call

I guess A.I agents can be reuse to make scamm calls. Now A.I agents can call and make appointment for you so they can call others and scamm them. I guess it is more easier than deepfake calls.

This is a growing problem. Everybody needs to stay vigilant, be skeptical, and always double-check before sending money to anyone who calls claiming to be your family member in distress.
