It's a very informative post.

Two ideas (or facts, if your prefer) presented that were news to me!

(1) Witches are born witches. Sorcerers get to apply for the job later on in life.

(2) Witch doctors were called witch doctors because people called on them to cure an illness believed to have been caused by a witch.

I can imagine your reaction when you read this. You're probably thinking: What?

- I'm reacting back like: Yeah! I know! I didn't know that either!

I stay away from anything related to witches or witchcraft. It's against my faith. Just looking at this makes me uncomfortable.

If they are trying to convince people that witchcraft is good then I'll have to disagree, personally.

I have heart many stories about witches and witchcraft but I've never come across any form of witchcraft. The stories made me fear them badly.

The only thing I know about witches is they were burned at the stake many years ago if people thought there was anything remotely unusual about them. I think of them as fictional characters.

They also used to get chucked in water and if they sunk, they were not a witch and if they floated they were. If you were innocent, you would end up drowned so really there was no good outcome if you were suspected of being a witch.

I don't have much belief in these kinds of sorceries and witchcrafts but there is a strong belief in my village back in my hometown. I have not seen or experienced something myself but if I experience it in my real life then I would certainly believe it.

We have a semi serious joke here in our workplace. Witchces are not extinct, they are coming back with new name: Feminism. They are destroying families, relationship, love and definition of everything under the sun.

Modern people (mostly women) who call themselves witches, or Wiccans, are harmless. They just dabble with herbal remedies and do rituals with candles and baths, and sometimes dance in the nude. They like to pretend it's an ancient religion but it isn't really, it's only been around for about a hundred years.

Historically women who were accused of witchcraft were herbalists and midwives, and also women who lived alone, or were ugly or strange who could be used as scapegoats for things that went wrong- eg. 'the crops failed, a witch must have cursed us'. There have been (and still are) also those who sell curses and spells (love spells etc), but they're just con artists, nothing to be afraid of. People even sell spells online- you can find them on Etsy selling weird stuff like spells to make you shapeshift into a tiger or whatever.

The thing is ... there is really no need to pretend because herbal remedies are awesome! But I guess it's a way to get people to use them. Kind of like how some parents put ketchup on food to get kids to eat it. (Yes. I used to do that! )

It's not witches selling herbal remedies any more. That's health food shops, chemists etc. Wicca's not really about that, and I don't think they see themselves as pretending, any more than people of any other religion do.

Edit: Ah, I read your comment wrong. I am quite sleepy this morning. They're not pretending to believe in what they belief, the pretense is about how old the religion is (and most of them probably do actually think it's ancient, they're just wrong). That's really nothing to do with herbal medicines though.

We'd pore over silly spells and rituals other girls would write too usually for things like becoming gorgeous overnight or rich or dumb stuff like that I wonder if I could find that website now, or whether it's gone.

There are still tonnes of websites and witch groups online.

In the 90s'/early 2000s there was a magazine called Witchcraft that was sold in news agencies. I read a few back in my 20's. I never believed in any of it, but dabbling in it was a great way to meet women.

My brother always told me to read anything I wanted to read. But I wasn't obligated to believe everything that I read. I read all kinds of stuff! (You never know when they might that question on Jeopardy.)
