Twitch is no longer available in Korea

Postby sweerie_banana » 13 Dec 2023, 20:08

Twitch company has recently come out and said it will no longer be available in South Korea come next year on February 26th. What is your take on this?
Do you think the government pushed out Twitch?

The reason is that internet providers were charging extremely high I feel so sorry for the Koreans.

I believe that nothing forced Twitch to leave if not government witch-hunt. The Korean government has been known to be authoritarian.

If Twitch decided to leave Korea due to concerns about government actions or regulations, it could be a strategic decision based on a variety of factors, including the regulatory environment, legal requirements, or business considerations.

The Asian countries have not really felt comfortable with these video sharing sites. I am not surprised with Twitch leaving Korea.

High costs can be a significant barrier for any business operating in a particular market. If Twitch found it financially unsustainable to continue its operations due to these charges, they might have decided to withdraw from Korea.

Businesses come and go and that is the nature of most businesses. This can be caused by different reasons including including higher cost of business operations due to raised taxes and custom duty.

If Twitch faced challenges in South Korea that made its operations financially unsustainable, it could have influenced the decision to withdraw.

This might include factors such as high licensing fees, compliance costs, or other financial burdens associated with operating in that specific region.

I still believe their exit has more to do with government policies than with any other factor knowing the antecedents of Korea.

Yeah, it's only natural that the country would have its own streaming platforms catering specifically to the Korean audience. These platforms can now step up to fill the void left by Twitch's absence.

How Internet provider can charge additional fee for specific website? Internet provider charge fee for internet traffic but for what will be used, it is not their problem. (Different case are illegal acitivies).

Most companies have left Korea because of unfavourable policies of government. I just feel the government is insecure. That's why they want to control everything.

Governments should foster an environment that encourages open communication, and embraces technological advancements rather than stifling them.
