Pop How internet changed the world of gaming

Postby Netherrealmer » 13 Sep 2018, 01:12

Videogames got invented during the 1970's and people are able to play them on arcades or home consoles at home. Up to the early 2000's most gaming experience is offline.I might be quiet young but I did enjoyed playing retro games because it is a piece of history that shows how far technology had come. Some gamers say the internet made gaming better while some people say that it killed what make games fun.

How did the internet made gaming better?

Online Gaming-
Before you needed to go to an arcade or invite a friend at home to play multiplayer. Now you can play with millions of people around the world even if you never met. Many people are able to meet friends online because of online gaming. You can also play with your friends who lives on another house or a relative who lives abroad. Online gaming is a fun way to bond with different people.

Patches and updates- If a game is released with lots of bugs and glitches, You will felt upset back then because no matter how much you complained it will never be fixed. With the internet, Many video game developers upload patches to fix these bugs. Sometimes the free updates are more than patches for a more seamless gaming but a new content to expand your experience.

Streaming- During the early days of Youtube many TRIPLE A game developers thought streaming as an enemy. They make copyright dispute accusing people who upload videos of piracy thinking people will not play their games if they will just upload it on Youtube.... Then suddenly small independent developers pays streamers to play their games on Youtube as free promotion and it worked. Many Independent games became huge hits and managed to get sales because of streaming. From being accused as a form of piracy, video game streaming is seen as a free promotion for games. Now developers of Mainstream games made their games streaming friendly and wanted their games to be streamed. Streaming is now a legit online job that makes more money than most 9 to 5 jobs and side from Youtube new platforms are born like Hitbox and Twitch.

Mods If you finished a PC game multiple times and you felt bored of it and wish it can have changes, back in the days it is impossible. Thanks to the internet you can now download mods that will alter the game into something else. Many Talented programs are sharing their mods online for free where you can get alternate skins and game modes.

E-sports- Thanks to many online tournaments, E-sports became a thing. Now Colleges are giving scholarship to good players who can compete on E-sports and represent their college.

How did internet ruined gaming

Toxic people online If you are playing online you may encounter the most obnoxious people at the Multiplayer modes. People who have mouths you want to wash with soap. Then there are the rage quitters, people who will disconnect the internet if they lose against you so their lost from you won't be counted. The worst people are the cyberbullies who attack people on the comment section and chat boxes of streams. The online community is a great way for gamers to find friends but it is also a place to find awful people.

DLC and microtransaction I remember the good old days where if you buy a cartridge or CD you have a full game with unlockables. The game is worth the money because of many features. Now things changed. Game developers don't finish games at all. They will release an unfinished game then make the fans pay more money for additional content. Before extra content is an unlockable reward for finishing the game.

So many clickbait fake news about upcoming games. You want to find an update about the upcoming sequel of a game. Then it will take you hours before you find real details because it is drowning in an ocean of fake clickbait gaming articles and videos.

Interesting article!
I started to play games in the 90's and I can assure that gaming was a really different experience at the time. Nowadays games are more realistic, with good stories :) This make us create a connection with the caracters.
Beyond that the internet bring us the possibility to play with people that we don't know in person, people that can live in the other side of thw worls... make new friends and connections... but like you mentioned isn't all good things. It's very hard to play with haters :(

I always mute the microphones when I play multiplayer because I do not want to hear the foul language of some annoying kids.

Honestly! If you were preaching a sermon on this I would be in your Amen corner! My kids play lots of games and I'm happy they know how to maneuver in a hostile world.

Another disrespectful thing kids do at online gaming is teabagging. Once they killed their character, they will sit on your character's face as disrespect.

i must admit, I do love a bit of trolling. In particular with Dark Souls, great trolling games. Can't stand people screaming down the microphones and kids voices irritate me so I usually mute too.

I totally get it. It's that way with everything. Like when you're at a job. No matter what kind of job it is, there is always a person everybody tries to avoid. And it's not just you! Everybody runs from that person! :D

Learned a new term: "teabagging".

tea bagging is when your opponent sits on your character's face after beating you. It's a sign of disrespect.

LOL. That's quite a contrast to Eleanor Roosevelt's quote about a tea bag.

I think characters dont fall down and knocked out after getting defeated to prevent teabagging. But people can still teabag.

I also hate the rage quitters. Players who quits the game when they are about to lose, so your win against them won't be recorded.

I like playing multiplayer online
and being a streamer.
But I do hate the trolls who play just to lose. Or they just mess around and make the team lose.

The best is when you get paid to play games that is what I love about the net. I remember the days of playing with friends and at an arcade. I still go to the arcades and play in person. it's a different feeling and experience.
