Pop Why I don't want to enter the restaurant business

Postby Netherrealmer » 10 Jul 2020, 17:12

I got the inspiration for this article from Barbie!!! What? If you think about it, Barbie tried all jobs are careers.

Image

Which leads to the creation of these videos.

Those videos are basically Barbie cursing like a sailor and telling people why they should not pursue these jobs because you know she tried all jobs in existence.

I want to make my own version of these warnings but instead of careers and jobs I want to focus on businesses. I am not really saying these businesses are bad but I will warn you all the negatives of these business if you ever decided to pursue them. I knew some people who pursued these businesses and how it have negative effects with their life. This is going to be a series and I will start with Restaurants.

Restaurant
- I have some restaurant Horror stories and all are based on real life! I changed the name of these people I personally knew for their privacy.

Nelly- Nelly loves to cook, people said her cooking is delicious so she decided to start a restaurant from her life savings! Her motivation is her family and friends telling her she is such a great cook. Well guess what because she cooks with quality ingredients.... Her food ends up being expensive for the masses. Another person opens a restaurant, their food is crappy but damn cheap. She is passionate with cooking so changing her recipe to make it more affordable is something her ego can't handle. Her restaurant ends up closing down. She got broken hearted. She started a garage sale to sell the utensils of her restaurant. I purchased her Oven and some of her plates. She is now a grocery owner.

Marcus- Marcus is a successful chef that use to work on a hotel. He also started a restaurant and its doing well. Guess what? All of his children resents him and hates him because his toxic personality from his work at the kitchen resonates at home. He become this dictator like tormentor to his wife and children. He is tired from cooking at his kitchen so he makes his wife and oldest son cook for him. He is such a perfectionist that he becomes a verbally abusive monster to them if the soup is too bland or too salty.

I am sure you guys are familiar with Gordon Ramsay reality show "Hell's kitchen".

That video above could be you if you are either a chef or a restauranteur.

A commercial kitchen is one of the most toxic workplaces out there. Many restaurant owners became very hot headed and toxic at home and at work. I am the supplier of eggs to his restaurant and I always notice how his employees and family hates him. I am not saying all Restaurant owners are toxic but if you will enter this business make sure to give something to your Psychological well being you won't become a monster.

Rudy- This man is a friend of mine and he is doing well with his food truck business. He started with one food truck and now he have 4 though he is currently struggling financially because of Covid 19. When his business was still doing well pre-covid 19. I notice how his business is a magnet for Karens! Yes many of his customers are Karens who are very verbally abusive to his employees.

Scenes like this are the norm with his business.

Even if you and your employees push your best to give the customers the bests service, Many customers still transform into a Karen!!!

Emily- I don't personally know her but her restaurant was very popular in my town but all of that notoriety she worked hard for have gone into the drain. A food poisoning incident happened. Her restaurant got sued by the customer and poof all of her hopes and dreams are gone and the restaurant got closed down. This food poisoning caused her to experience extreme depression. The only restaurants that can getaway with food poisoning are Chipotle and Taco Bell but not every restaurant with food poisoning cases can survive.

Amy- Her restaurant is doing well but her Bills, are nightmarish. Her water bills is charged as a commercial account , My business is not considered commercial We consume the same amount of her water but her bills are 3 times bigger than mine. Yup commercial businesses have a more expensive water bill. My business is residential so I have lower water bills than her even though we consume the same amount of water.

I worked in kitchen and it is not easy job. For owners there is hundred of saftey regulations and every worker can easily make you big damage. Also, every guest must be satisfied since bad word is much stronger than good word about it. In you examples, all those people like cook but they don't like be managers. Be both is almost impossible. They all like cook great meals but in that case they must find some manager to solver administration stuffs.

Aside from safety regulation, There are also the labor laws with the employees. I rather have a free range duck farm since ducks can take care of themselves.

A restaurant is a very stressful business, I would go crazy if I had one. I don't have my own business and I know I will never be rich but I prefer something more calm to work on or to be the owner.

The catering sector is saturated here, so that would be the first hurdle for me. Although I think it would be worth a bash because people here have little to no imagination (not throwing shade, just stating facts!) and tend to offer very samey food, running a restaurant /catering nature is highly stressful. Those who succeed at it make it look easy but it holds no appeal for me.

Restaurant owners have to deal with health inspectors, food critics, commercial level water bill, commercial level electric bill, Labor laws and worst will be food poisoning which cannot be avoided because there are customers with random allergies they didn't know.

Nice story about barbie, she got experience in trying, their is no harm in trying. Maybe you might get that desired job in your next try, who knows. Restaurant business is okay, only if you know how to manage it.

Some experiences you had there and hope something productive was learnt from it there though negative we really have to be alive to the fact that there are some restraunts that have done pretty well and also take not that a restraunt business has a cash flow which in my case is quite good to work on.So at the end its all about what your planning strategy is in terms of investment.Offcourse flows will be there with the law and fellow workers and sometimes it can reflect even in personal life but when you have set yourself to achieve some goal then you will likely soar above any challenge.

If you have restaurat business, you work 24/7. If you are main chef and restaurant have your name, every customer expect you will make food for them. You probably hear for british naked chef - Jamie Oliver.
Jamie start several restaurants with his name on it. Restaurants were good but when people notice he don't make food for them, which is normal since he can't be on multiple place at same time, people lost interest for his restaurants.
Restaurant business is not for all people. Better try fast food or delivery. Corona just made restaurant business even worst.

Any business requires great attention and investment in its development. Regardless of its appearance. So be prepared for this. Immediately I share a valuable contact of a company

They need to follow strict hygienic rules and have regular inspections here. Since I saw a TV show about saving real restaurants to close, I stopped to go eating out. What they found in those restaurants was so disgusting that my stomach can't handle it. Besides all the stress to cook different and several dishes every day, the cleaness of a restaurant is surely a headache.

It also contributes to food waste because many customers orders a lot but doesn't finish their food.

In many restaurants, what customer don't eat, waiter get for lunch. Or sometimes it finishes on other guest plate. Example, lemon. Often lemon is mostly decorative part of food so it can be usef again if it is not damaged or dried. Sometimes same lemon is served on several tables. I worked in restaurants and unfortunately this is often practice.

I have always toyed with the idea, launching my own restaurant. Had there been no Covid at the beginning of 2020, I guess, I would have opened my own restaurant. However, I am still brooding on my restaurant business, but not a regular type of restaurant instead of a food delivering company.

Doing well does not equate to happiness though, Many restaurateurs have miserable children. They develop this dictatorial perfectionist personality.

Not only because of perfectionism, most restaurants owners don't take time for their families, to be with them, to go on holidays with their children because if they close the restaurant they won't have their source of income.

I think Covid crisis has given a new meaning to this restaurant business. These days many restaurants have switched their business model, now they are take-away centers. In a time when we are social distancing, restaurant is a dying business, unless the owners switch their operation modality.

Some restaurants are now selling frozen food or tv dinners because they cant rely on take outs alone.

I also am a pastry chef by profession and a very disappointed one. Currently, I am unemployed. I decided I won't be employed again after I lost my job three years back so my mum opened up a hotel for me which was practically a shop and I was managing it and also cooking. I closed down at the beginning of December. I am so happy I came across this since I was feeling I am just draining myself over something that would just drain me in the end, Don't forget the back problems one can experience cause of the hard labor there. sometimes you are just standing for hours and hours without sitting down.

I decided to install the internet come next year. Reading this I am now determined more than ever to just be cooking for my family or when called for an outside catering that is paying me good enough. Reading all your articles @ Netherrealmer, empower me and I gain so much knowledge from them. I will work here at ForumCoin and out in that effort I was putting in my shop.
