Being an ESL teacher or Online English teacher is one of the most profitable job online that it can replace a full time job and it also makes a great part time job since you have the control of your schedule. Many people though are very afraid to try it because of wrong assumptions. Assumptions that I will debunk today because I want people to try it instead of making excuses and
1. You have to speak Japanese or whatever language the school students came from to be hired. This is not true. 95% of online English teachers only speaks English. Also most Japanese and Koreans actually have basic English as part of their curriculum. So even the lowest tier students knows a bit of English. You do not need to learn any new language as it is not a requirement. Also not all students you will get are from the same country. I had European and Latino students too.
2.You must have background on teaching English to be hired- There are schools who wants college diplomas and master degrees but there are schools who don't care that they will even hire highschool kids as they don't make background checks. So No, you don't any experience or background to be hired. As long as your English is very fluent, You can neutralize your accent so students can understand, You always smile and have a please personality and you have the internet connection minimum they like you will get hired. This is a school to school basis. There are schools who have high standards of requirement while there are schools that are easy to enter.
3.You must be good with children. If you don't like children, You can do classes at night and have adults and teens as students. Also most Asian children are actually polite. So the job is not stressful at all.
4. You have to make a lesson plan. You do not need to memorize some kind of spiel and you don't need to make lesson plans. The company that hires you provides you with the materials on their website. You will just read it to your students. Yes, you are reading it and not memorizing it.
5. The Payment is not good. Well compared to PTC, Being a hired forum poster, paid to captcha and all of those beer money money making websites, This is much more easier. You can earn up to 700 dollars or more if you are from an Asian country and if you are from US or Europe you can make up to 2500 dollars. It is more of a school to school basis. The first month will be difficult but you will eventually have regulars. Students are very loyal as long as you won't cancel classes without notice. There are some downsides but that will be a whole other article.
6. You must have experience to get hired. The fact some schools hired highschool kids means they don't give a damn about experience. You just need to ace your skype job interview. This article will give you idea on how to pass a skype job interview:

The high paying schools requires Tesol but there are schools that don't need it. The Tesol free schools are good enough to put you above poverty line and have a middle class lifestyle. It is not a requirement to get hired through as many schools don't require them. While you don't have tesol, You can go for less strict schools like Bibo, 51talk and 9ichat are schools that accepts a lot of people with no experience and tesol certificates.
