Wake up the world needs you. Yes You. I am addressing you. Let me take you to those powerful words of the late John f. Kennedy, the then President of the United States of America.

"My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

I will word it slightly differently and say

Ladies and gentlemen, ask not what the world can do for you but what you can do for the world
The world is on the verge of total destruction and the total blame goes to every individual living and dead.
Unless individuals wake up no government can do anything no matter how many laws are put in place.
The role of an individual cannot be underestimated. It is a huge role however small the act can be It is the individual that can make or mar.

Here is how.

Garbage management Do not throw garbage on the streets. Convert wet garbage into useful compost. Just dump the wet garbage in a pit. Spread soil over it at regular intervals and in a year’s time the best compost is produced. The solid garbage can be handed over to the garbage collector

Saving water Just one litre a day by an individual can add up to a trillion or more litres of water, the world over.

Saving energy Put off light and fans when not needed This small act can lead to savings of energy the world over –

Increasing greenery Plant a tree. Yes just one. If you can, plant more. That can have a tremendous effect on the deforestation created by concrete jungles.

Watching neighbours Do not put up with the wrong doings of your neighbour who plays a negative role. Speak up even at the cost of upsetting them. Time diffuses situations and you will again be friends. .

Reducing noise pollution Do not fire crackers and do speak up when others indulge in these unhealthy practices. Use earphones to listen to your favourite music. Others have their own. They do not need to listen to yours.

Taking care of public property. Do not urinate on sides of roads – not only it is an ugly site but it will pollute the environment around

Being proactive wherever and whenever. Spread the word around. You do not have to stand on the stage and do it but in a simple conversation with friends, neighbours, family members and this can do wonders.

May be there are many more activities that can help retrieve what we have lost. If an individual makes up their mind and takes cudgels in their hand to play that small role towards improving the condition of this broken world that role will yield mega results.

The population is busting at the seams and it is this population that should wake up and play their role. When done, situations can change overnight.

We hear of grandiose plans the world leaders have to take care of the climate change but without the help of the individual they can do nothing. It is at the grass root level where action is.

When the time comes to pass one should be able to say that they have a left a better world behind.

WAKE UP - THE WORLD NEEDS YOU

Taking part in the political process is another key to waking up. There are many who don't vote. Voting in not possible in all locations; but, where you have the right you should exercise it. People have died for your right to vote. Choose your elected officials wisely and stay in touch with the officials to let them know your views. Yes our environment is important. Even common household cleansers, sprays etc can have damaging effects on our environment. Perhaps we can use less toxic products.

another way an individual can contribute to society is by being aware of news and events happening in one's country and around the world. this way, one can join a social movement and help by volunteering in the community

We are in the year 2017 and the situation is getting worse each year. Whoever you vote for has done nothing. Therefore it is for you and me to wake up and do our bit and that bit can amount to a huge bit changing the world overnight

I fully agree with you Spreading the message such as, for example, sharing this article to whoever you can lay your hands on could be one way.

Very motivating. There is a lot to do in order to change the world. It's just that we are running short of actions.

I really like the message behind this! People tend to think everything has to be left to the government, but let's face it, governments need our support. They simply can't do it alone. We all have to take responsibility and do our bit, otherwise we're headed for disaster. Every little helps, and my husband and I really try to recycle most of the materials we use like carrier bags and paper, not wasting water, switching off lights if not required. It's not much but if we all did it, it would add up into something much more meaningful.

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

- such an apt statement!

@Angie10 Most of that mess is our creation and so it is left to us to clean it. We can still do it. Drops make an ocean and that drop is the individual's support.

-- 21 Jun 2017, 17:28 --

@skysnap One main thing we all can do is to spread the message at every nook and corner besides lending a helping hand to tidy this world. We can do it.

-- 23 Jun 2017, 10:52 --

Has this article has had any effect on you @skysnap, @Angie10, @Happyland? Have you tried to spread the message?

We lack the skills of managing our wastes. Wastes are very important to our comfort especially if we can analyze them and study their importance.

I'm so agree with you,
I try to keep our world clean and care less about driving in the car so as not to pollute the environment, but if I have to, I bought a car with a hybrid engine (part works on electricity and some on fuel), I also take care to separate and recycle my garbage so that it will not last for years On earth and polluted it.
Also recently I started volunteering to lecture school students on how to preserve the environment in which we live ...

The whole ordeal is so simple if only individuals take on the mantle.

The message is very motivating and a useful list to stick closeby for constant reminder. However, it is not applicable to every country as the problems facing the US is very different from say an African country. The fight in Africa is often for better healthcare, clean drinking water, food and end to tribal war.

You are right there are other issues that need attention but what is mentioned here is of a general nature that can be applied to the world as a whole.

Surely the world needs us but it's so unfortunate that sometimes we tend to see only ourselves in situations which we ought to have considered others also. Take for example, you take that garbage out of your house and poured it somewhere in which even the laws of your country had forbidden due to some meaningful reasons, however you don't even care because after all the garbage ain't on your bed, it's somewhere else. Whether it's effecting the next neighbor, you don't mind. There are several examples out there.

When the appeal says the world needs you it includes everyone around us and so if you throw garbage where it is not supposed to be thrown then you are surely not paying attention to this appeal.

If you look at your lifestyle and see what role you play in destroying the earth that is a good enough contribution. We all are guilty and that includes me.

Everything starts with us and our lifestyle. A look at our lifestyle will tell us if we are contributing or destroying the earth - as simple as that

There are some who use waste to advantage - atleast I do to some extent. I use solid waste as filler material for fundations and our wet waste is turned to compost.

We can only do this if everybody contribute.
Because what is a use if a whole town does the right thing, if one factory does the wrong thing...
