Bright stars on the theatrical firmament or a few words about one-act ballets

Postby Sophya » 09 Feb 2020, 16:23

Ballet is an art that combines music, plastic, and acting. Ballet dancers don't just move on the stage, they flit over it, creating fantastic, weightless images.

There are many classical ballets. These are the Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, and Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Raymonda, and others. One-act ballets should be mentioned among them. Although these ballets are short, they deeply impress their viewers, leaving their mark on people’s hearts.

1. Carmen Suite. This is a very bright and eccentric ballet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAwoh5H33lo). Beautiful music and dancing take the audience to sultry Spain. The ballet has everything: Spanish passion, rejected love, and a cruel ending. The main character is Carmen. In the choreography of Alberto Alonso, she is a proud and freedom-loving Gypsy. Carmen drives the young soldier Jose crazy. For her sake, he is in breach of his obligations, transcends the law. But the girl's heart does not belong to Jose for long. Soon she falls in love with a beautiful matador who fights fearlessly in the Bullring. The finale of this ballet is very tragic. Carmen publicly rejects Jose and he kills the girl in a fit of anger. No one else will get the love of the Gypsy.

2. The Spirit of the Rose. This is a very beautiful old ballet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkqEiaKUQSA). The girl has a dream that the Ghost of a Rose flies into her open window. He dances around the sleeping girl, his movements graceful and easy. The Ghost, like the delicate fragrance of a flower, wraps the girl. He takes her hand and they dance together. Then she wakes up, and the youth-rose disappears into the window. Alas, it was only a dream. The ballet was created by Vaclav Nijinsky, who was the first to perform the role of the Spirit of the Rose.

3. The Young Man and Death. This ballet was created by Roland Petit after World War II (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k9LSqIjyuU). This is a psychological ballet. It shows a person's struggle with their emotions and problems. In the attic, a young man lives in a squalid situation. He's an artist. It was a difficult time for him, his girlfriend left him, and there were financial difficulties. The young man is in despair, he suffers from his experiences; from loneliness. Suddenly a girl appears in the room. This is not his beloved. The girl symbolizes his fears, his plight. She tries to suppress him, then flirts with him, then drives him away. The young man desperately resists, tries to find a way out of the situation. Unfortunately, it is weak and cannot withstand the pressure of problems. The youth commits suicide.
The role of a young man is very difficult; a ballet artist needs not only to dance it but also to show the youth's state of mind.

These three ballets are just a tiny part of a whole galaxy of ballets. In addition to classical one-act ballets, new modern ones are being created. However, every theatergoer has his favorite ballet.

What a pity that there were no connoisseurs of ballet!

I am so sorry for not being a ballet connoisseur. Although I have always liked ballet dancing. I do know about the Nutcracker and Swan Lake. But these that you have mentioned I did know about at all. I very much appreciate your introduction.
