My RE-ranking is arbitrary, based on subjective data (my experiences) as opposed to the objective data eBizMBA gathered to compile their list (Alexa rank, total number of unique visitors, etc.) Below is my reasoning or justification for “my rankings”. If you have had your own experience with these sites, you may or may not agree with me. I hope that whatever I share has value.
* * *
(1) Twitter – Short posts (280 characters) allowed. Updates are in real time. Super easy way to share links to your blog posts, your articles, affiliate referral links, etc. You can retweet your own tweets. Multiple accounts are allowed. If you have social sharing buttons at your websites or blogs it's very easy to tweet them. Most of the other social media accounts can be linked so that social media updates in one account, also appear as a tweet to let followers in both places know.
(2) Facebook – The leader of the pack and still champion even though Pinterest and Google Plus tried to snatch away a significant portion of their market share and even though they are being bashed for not supporting democracy and allowing shameful activities of perverts to be publicized. It is said that teens prefer SnapChat to Facebook. No matter to me since I'm not trying to appeal to a teenage audience. I use Facebook mainly for business networking. I have a profile and several business pages. The audience I am trying to reach is on Facebook. Like Twitter it is also a super easy way to share links. But from time to time you might get ZAPPED for “spamming”. Not sure what the “rules” are. (O.o) I just know that I rarely have that problem with Twitter.
(3) Tumblr – This appears on my list ahead of Pinterest for a few reasons. Freedom. Super easy to post and share. Easy to curate content. The social network seems to consists of people who are not on the other social media networks. Tumblr allows multiple accounts. Affiliate links are also allowed. The blog can be linked to both Twitter and Facebook so that as soon as a post is published it is automatically shared to these social networks. The future of Tumblr is uncertain however. Management and owners keep shuffling. Nevertheless, I'm making use of a good thing while it lasts.
(4) Pinterest – The Pinterest owners have been nothing but very nice to me. My account started as a personal account and then I was invited to convert it to a business account free of charge. Pinterest also began allowing affiliate links. Housewives, i.e. the people in charge of shopping in most households, were drawn to Pinterest right from the start. As a result this platform literally siphoned off a good percentage of advertising revenues from both Facebook and Google. It has earned its place among the social media giants. The most recent business indicators showed that not only housewives are avid Pinterest users. Many businesses, educational institutions, and even government agencies are on Pinterest.
(5) Google Plus – I was invited to participate in the G+ testing process before it was made available to the public. When the network became official, my account was already set up and I was good to go! G+ is not at the top of the list. But it's not at the bottom either! Why use Google Plus? Uuuhh … why not? It's GOOGLE! Posts and shares by G+ users show in search engine results. Just set your profiles or pages to Public. There is also the Collections feature. This is sort of like Pinterest pinboards and you can organize your posts better and they are easy to retrieve at a late date. Like Facebook, I have a profile and several business pages.
(6) Instagram is not on the list of the “Top 15 Most Popular” and I don't know why. I have already explained why people who are active on social media should jump on the IG bandwagon. viewtopic.php?f=67&t=19874
(7) LinkedIn is also not on the list of the “Top 15 Most Popular” and I don't know why. If you have a LI profile it's like your professional resume. People can search you out and perhaps offer you employment or a business opportunity. All of my blog posts and articles are shared via LinkedIn. Also my LI account is linked with one of my Twitter accounts and all LI updates are immediately tweeted. LI also has an article writing or blog publishing platform. You can publish original or republished content.
(8) Scoop It – Really cool content curation tool. I connected my Google Plus business page and Tumblr account to facilitate sharing or posting my “scoops” (content shared) to these social media sites. I can post to Scoop.it and then share the content immediately or at a later date. Can also share at websites or blogs using the embedded scoop feature. I was invited to try Scoop.it and am very pleased with the experience. However, a friend introduced me to Flipboard (see comments in number 9 below) and I have to say to that, by comparison, the content curation process is much more simplified. But I keep my Scoop.it topics online because I'm loyal. It's a backlink which is recognized by the search engines. That counts for something!
(9) We Heart It was not on the list of the “Top 15 Most Popular”. However, I wrote a detailed article explaining the benefits of using both We Heart It and Flipboard for content distribution. viewtopic.php?f=67&t=16928
(10) Stumble Upon – If you ever need to search for hidden treasure, you could probably find it using StumbleUpon. Other than that I don't really use this site much. However, many SU users have said that their shares bring traffic to their websites and blogs. I maintain my SU account because it has historical value to me.
As for the rest? If they are popular, I don't know what the appeal or attraction is. (O.o) Do you use any of these? My Top 10 sites above and/or the ones listed below. Please share your thoughts.
