This is anything but a stupid question.
There are multiple reasons: erasing your past, disappearing from the public views, starting it all over, or mostly if you have personal details about yourself that you don't want to see public/published.

I can imagine that if I say posted my address on a public forum and someone quoted me then having it removed would be good but otherwise what instances might the other things be relevant?

There are many, many causes that would force someone to disappear from the Internet, starting from cyber bullying. The websites that help you remove yourself from the Internet actually have a good audit, so there are lots of people that want to disappear from it.. whatever the reasons are. Some are probably due to illegal reasons.

You're very welcome. It might include a few posts deleting, but unfortunately, most of the posts you've written on thers' sites cannot be removed by yourself; you'll have to contact the concerned website administrator.

Contact the website administrator, and if he doesn't respond or refuses to remove the video (which is illegal), you may contact Google to remove the link from the search Engine.

* * Move away from worrying about deleting your posts. Make your back up copies and then look for websites that will accept republished content. The "shroud of mystery" that is now surrounding Literacy Base doesn't look like it's going to be lifted any time soon. And is there any good reason why you should wait to find out what's going to happen with the site?

Your focus should be on trying to salvage all of your hard work some how. Either republish your content at sites that accept it or use your stand alone blog and publish your posts there. Remember that Literacy Base agreed to do certain things and they have not honored their agreement. Why should you suffer a loss and get the short end of the stick? It's not right!
