Its actually more complicated than I thought it out to be. There are different "game" modes you can bet on. The simplest is moneyline where you bet on the winning or losing team. There are other games like how much the total score will be over and under, if a team will lose or win by how much, etc. The odds you bet on come from a "book" the website looks onto and can vary from site to site.
Yeah, the number of markets can be crazy. In soccer/football, you have things like over/under, number of goals, first player to score, actual score, winning team at half-time, win/lose/draw, number of corners etc. Bonkers.
