Statistics software

Postby Clairefndss » 13 Apr 2025, 20:32

Hey everyone,
I'm currently working on a research project and I'm exploring different statistics software options. I’ve used SPSS in the past (mostly for uni), but I’m now looking for something a bit more flexible—maybe R or Python?
The thing is... I’m not super techy, so I’d love something with a balance between power and usability. ;)

Does anyone have experience transitioning from SPSS to R? Is the learning curve insane or manageable if you follow a good tutorial? And what about the visualization part—any recommendations on packages or tools that make it easier (especially for presentations)?

Also curious if anyone has tried newer tools like Jamovi or JASP.
Would love to hear what works best for your workflow.

Thanks! :P

Hi Clairefndss, thanks for posting your question. Good for you for taking on that challenge. It's not an area I have much experience in. Can you please give a little more info on what you would like to achieve? Our members will be able to give more helpful replies, if you can please give a little more info.

Even I don't work in Big Data area, I teach Python and Excel and show kids some tricks for charts in both software. From what I could read while I am doing research in Python, I think R is better. Most people start in Python but end up in R. From what I read, R is definitely better for visualization. I am keeping chance I read wrong. Maybe Python is just better for calculation and save data in lists and then use R for visualization.

You can try using Numpy package as well as Sci Kit and a few more Python APIs.
Some statistical processing can be done by Python Pandas.
Also, there is Seaborn API for making graphs.

As for SPSS, I do not have much of an idea.
