Mobile Devices in Education

Postby sweerie_banana » 11 Feb 2024, 05:03

Discuss the role of mobile devices in education and learning. How are smartphones and tablets being integrated into classrooms and educational programs to enhance teaching methods and student engagement? Share success stories or challenges encountered in implementing mobile technology in educational settings.

My daughter since I gave her my old smartphone has been dropping in her school work. Is it true that mobile devices can enhance someone's education before I snatch the phone from her?
What am I possibly doing wrong?

The local high school here requires that children in grades 9 - 12 (so 14-18 year olds) bring a laptop to school to use for their school work. I have mixed feelings about that because some families can't afford to buy their children a computer (especially if they have more than one child). However, the kids are not allowed to use mobile phones at school. They can have them, but they're supposed to keep them stored in their bags. So they don't use them in the classroom at all here. At least the students don't, although teachers use smartphones for things like keeping notes, playing music (for the class).

You can use a phone for educational things, like making art (there are drawing programs), and looking up news stories etc. but social media can be a huge time sink.

Are there any programs in place, to help those who can't afford them, to provide a laptop for their children?

Yes, there are often programs and initiatives in place to help provide laptops or other digital devices to students from low-income families who may not be able to afford them.

In some regions, government assistance programs provide funding or subsidies to low-income families to purchase essential items, including computers for educational purposes. Families may qualify for these programs based on their income level or other criteria.

Integrating mobile devices into education has become increasingly common in recent years, as they offer numerous benefits for both teaching methods and student engagement.

But, it's important to establish boundaries and rules when it comes to using mobile devices for educational purposes. Make sure your daughter understands that the phone is primarily for educational purposes and set limits on the amount of time she can use it for other purposes.

Mobile devices in education has its own pros and it's own cons. Easy access to research information is the main pro. While the con is that it can easily distract learning and study sessions.

Mobile devices are used in so many institutions right now. Religious and even educational institutions all make use of mobile devices. It's usage in schools is inevitable.

Mobile devices being used in education makes learning much easier. Have this feeling I would have graduated much better if I schooled in this era.

In my school we have tablets. Teachers often use it but we notice they knowledge about it is very low even people think they know much about it.

Country paid all tablets and we have about 50 functional tablets.

For me, I feel any child that doesn't have tech devices to learn with now is missing out on a lot of things. A child should be taught alongside tech and mobile devices constitute a vital aspect of tech.

Often use of Digital Gadgets come with a big minus as far as use by kids is concerned.
The advantages of using the Gadgets for gaining knowledge and enhancing skills is offset by addiction, excess use and the collateral side effect on eyes and physical activity.
If one can maintain the balance, it is good.
Else it would be a struggle to help the kids with such gadgets.

ln a developing country like Kenya that kind of curriculum is not fit considering that majority of the Kenyans are living below the poverty levels.

It is not about the poverty level, it is more about the will of the school founders and leaders to desire to see such level of advancement. If they desire it, they would surely do it.

Here in 90% School, smartphones and tablets are not allowed. If students bring it then they are not permitted to enter in school. I am in this favour like if you put milk in bowl and strict cat to takecare of it. Do you think the cat will guard the milk. Here if smartphones allowed in school then students will definitely misuse it and whole teaching and learning process will become a mess.

There is no way I would be sending my child to a school that they're not using modern mobile devices into their teaching modules. The kids have to be up to speed with the times.

Not that I know of.

I don't think there is anything like that locally. If there is, the school hasn't told parents about it. The government keeps making proclamations about what will happen in schools then not bothering to follow through with the funding needed to make it happen. For example, all schools in my state are supposed to offer LOTE (language other than English- classes in another language) but in poor schools they don't because they don't have the teachers for it. There doesn't seem to be any plan to fix the inequality of this.

I know of a few kindergarten schools in my country that children have to complete their take home assignments online. I believe that is a good way of exposing them at that young age to digitization which would stimulate their interest in it.
