The difference between Japanese video game market and Western Market

Postby Netherrealmer » 20 Dec 2020, 10:35

When the Videogame Nier was released in Japan, the main character Nier is a teenage boy trying to save the life of his sister.

The Japanese Market prefers teenage boys as male protagonists. They love their men skinny.

When the game is released in the West, He is a Muscular guy on his 30s to 40s who is trying to save the life of his daughter.

When Mirror's edge is released in the US, The protagonist Faith is made to resemble Lucy Liu because in the US an ethnic look Asian girl is very attractive and exotic.

When the game is released in Japan, They tried to make her Shorter because tall women are not found attractive in Japan. She have bigger anime eyes because Ethnic look is not popular in Japan. They like anime big eyes. They also made her boobs bigger.

Japan prefers cute over Sexy, Look at the American Barbie Dolls next to Japan Barbie dolls

In the US, Crash Bandicoot looks Crazy but in Japan, they tried to make him cute.

The left 4 dead 2 characters are replaced in Japan.
Image

In America the main characters are an overweight middle aged African American male, An African American female news reporter , A male ex con and a young country bumpkin college boy.
Image

In Japan= The black characters are replaced by Japanese teenage characters. The ex-con guy is replaced by a beautiful white woman who works as a tourist guide and the country bumpkin boy is made more handsome.

Image

I think they replaced the white characters too hide the racism.

That's interesting. I am sure that all customisation and changes are brought keeping the target audience in mind. It's the basic mantra to run a successful business. You have to offer the service according to the target audience. It's just like how McDonald's and other popular brands customize their food and menu to suit local taste.

Interesting analysis. I think in the orient culture, men are made to look feminine and females are made to look cute. In the west, men are macho and female are sexy.

Americans like teenagers in series like Stranger Things. I think same is for movies when they save US or world ( Transformers first movie or Spiderman).

If you will look at the best-selling video games though, that are single-player, most American players prefers the generic 30-year-old guy with brown hair.

The Japanese video game market and the Western video game market have several key differences, including cultural preferences, gaming platforms, and industry trends. The western market have developed Xbox and PLayStations meanwhile the Japanese have the F2F. While these differences exist, it's important to note that the global gaming industry is dynamic and continually evolving. There is a significant exchange of ideas, styles, and trends between the Japanese and Western markets, resulting in a diverse and vibrant gaming landscape enjoyed by players worldwide.

Japanese games are diverse too though. I mean, Tekken have characters from the Poland,Thailand,Brazil, Philippines, Peru, Monaco, and other countries you never heard before. Japanese games can be diverse, but most Japanese games prefer either white protagonists or Asian protagonists.

Sexy is found intimidating in Japan thats why even their porn actresses are mostly cute over sexy except from few exceptions.

The differences between Japanese and Western video game markets reflect cultural preferences and societal norms. Both approaches have their own strengths and appeal to different audiences.

The Japanese gaming industry has a hint of racism about them. I believe the American gaming industry are more inclusive, typical of the American culture of inclusivity for everyone. And I love American games more than Japanese in terms of graphics and gameplay.

The only games that the Japanese have made and is devoid of racism is the sports themed games and that is because they can't put a racist twist to those ones.

They are becoming more accepting of black characters now. Genshin impact a Chinese game made their black characters too light skinned

Exactly this is why some games and movies are not released in certain countries cause it does not match the audience, or they do add or remove certain scenes for some countries.

You have done an interesting analysis. It's interesting to know how these games take in consideration of the culture and the cultural preferences while launching. Well, I didn't know that a feminine looking male is preferred in Japan. Can't say that as a thumb rule for all Asian countries. Here in India, men are supposed to be masculine and the ideal is TDH..tall, dark, handsome.
