Microsoft test free Office version

Postby mrki444 » 25 Feb 2025, 20:47

Microsoft Office is paid software and still most used office package even there are free alternatives like OpenOffice or LibreOffice.
Now Microsoft is testing new version of Office. It will be free version but it will have ads. Rotate banner or right side and videos ads.

Also you will not be able save file on local storage than just on OneDrive cloud service.

Other missing features in Word are Line spacing, Shading, Borders, Position, Align, Bring Forward/Backward.

This can be good for users who use office few times in a year, but regular users will stay with paid versions.

I mean, it's not going to hurt anybody to release a free version with ads. I'm sure some people can make use of it. But why are basic features like line spacing and alignment not included? I feel like they should include the basic features since they're making money off of the ads.

They want force you buy Office. It is same tactic with other softwares where you have free and premium option. For more options, you must buy premium.

Did anybody try this version? I can't test it since I am on official laptop. We must have paid software there.

I haven't tested. Since my normal paid version is still working, why go for the less feature version and which doesn't even allow me save local?

Microsoft is currently testing a new version of Office that is free but has ads in it. This version comes with a few limitations: you can't save files directly to your computer, but must use them only through OneDrive.

Also, some important Word features like Line spacing, Shading, Borders, and Align will not be available in this free version. Ads may appear as floating banners or videos on the side of the screen. While not as complete as the paid version, it could be a temporary solution for people who only use Office a few times a year. For everyday or professional users, the paid version will still remain the best option.

I stopped using Microsoft Office a decade ago. I have used LibreOffice since then, and I am happy ever after.

LibreOffice is super easy to use and navigate. It's free and open source, and you also get important updates pushed by the active open-source community occasionally when they are needed. You don't need to worry about frequent updates. One of the best things is. It's fast, extremely fast. Another most beautiful feature is you can save files and works in any format you prefer. You can do the work on LibreOffice and can save the file in Microsoft Office format. Even for the latest one. Just give it a shot once. I don't think you will regret it.

LibreOffice is truly a free gem. It is easy to use and its navigation is straight forward. Since the open source community pushes updates when needed, there is no stress of constant updates. Its speed is also very high and that makes it work smoothly.

The sweetest thing is the flexibility of formats, you can write your documents and then save them in Microsoft Office format without any problems even in the latest versions. It is a saying that you should not think it is useless. If you try it once, you will see its value and you will not regret it.

That sounds pretty exciting.
I would not mind watching Ads.
I would not even have minded paying something like INR 100 per month for such a software.
The option simply was not there.
Any latest news with regards to this software?

This seems to be aimed at very casual users. Others will likely stick to the paid, full-featured version.

This didn't work out well and that is why it was not released. It would have affected the revenue of Microsoft so badly.
